#51 Guns N' Roses » How big of a deal was Steven being fired when it happened? » 162 weeks ago

GNR went through a lot of changes in a pretty short amount of time:

In March 1990, Dizzy joined

Civil War was released on the Nobody’s Child benefit in June 1990 featuring piano on a GN’R song in an extended capacity (the outro of OIAM doesn’t necessarily count..)

Then Steven was fired in July, and Matt replaced him and KOHD was released with Matt in July 1990

So in a matter of six months you had a keyboardist joining the band altering the sound, and the original drummer fired and a very different drummer replacing him

Was there any fan reaction back when it happened? What was the initial reaction to Civil War and KOHD in 90 and GNR’s new sound (prior to the UYI release)?

I just had a quick peek at those vids. WTF?

I haven’t looked at any performances in a loooong time.

Has Axl cut his hair? Or has it just fallen out and that’s what he has left?

How much fucken filler does he have in his face? Jeebus!!!

He looks and sounded bloody terrible! Even worse than I remembered. I’m taking my son to see them in November (his first ever concert, since he’s only 12), but I’m worried it’s going to be shocking!!!

He cut his hair short

Doesnt seem like fillers in actual photos

At what point does the mainstream public and press view the delayed "20th anniversary" UYI box as a joke?

If it isn't announced in the next month or so as a potential Christmas buying season item, they will have to push it back to 2023.

22nd anniversary? Not exactly a milestone ...

One of the problems with a UYI set is that it doesn't even generate much hardcore fan interest/buzz for a number of reasons....

While the contents of the AFD set were ok, they pissed people off with the ridiculous price.

The off year anniversaries are amateur hour and don't inspire any confidence.

The GNR camp refuse to give any info about it. Pink Floyd... people known for their dysfunction and hatred of one another.... actually give updates on their upcoming Animals set....but an actual band is incapable of communication?!?

If the UYI set lacks video, it's going to piss fans off even more than the lack of AFD video did. They bragged for years about the mountains of video footage of the tour...to then not release any for its anniversary would be a slap in the face.

We live in a world where people expect a certain level of bang for their buck when it comes to purchasing deluxe editions and box sets. While some artists can get away with offering minimal content, it's not going to work here.

It's time to celebrate and wrap up the era with the definitive set. They get one crack at this. Give it the justice it deserves.

As we've talked about a bit over the years, the passage of time has done UYI no favors. They have dropped out of the major media outlets "Best song/album/videos of the 1990s" lists in articles and TV shows over the past decade or so. A lot of hardcore fans no longer listen to them. Within a decade or so, it'll probably be looked back on as famous for one song(November Rain).... maybe two(YCBM).

The crazy hype and infamous tour are slipping through the cracks of time. A killer set might save it...or a bad one quicken its downfall.

Edit

Here's how Pink Floyd handled the Animals 5.1 remix set coming out in a couple weeks...

They gave us Dogs...which is incredible.

Amazing they even gave us that because the song is essentially half the album.

And a couple vids to wet our appetite....

Only complaint there is it's too short.

Looks like they got rid of that short with the dog barking.

We're probably lucky to have gotten this one. As you can see, the remix was finished in 2018.

I’d argue it’s less the passage of time specifically for the UYIs and more that GN’R are seen as a nostalgia act. Their marketing over the past 20 years has been consistently AFD focused, until 2016 Axl played very few UYI songs.

If the UYIs are downplayed it’s because Axl has spent 25 years downplaying them himself. He has tried to very consciously appeal to a segment of Gen X that is highly nostalgic for the 80s, and not so much the early 90s

So, how can you expect the albums to continue in the public consciousness when the band that made them doesn’t promote and support them and none of their marketing is about them?

Axl/GN’R for almost 20 years have acted as if AFD was their only album, so in a time that is increasingly far from 1991, it feels in the public consciousness as if AFD was indeed their only album

I’d argue against the idea that the hardcore fans don’t listen to them. I think anyone who disliked the UYIs out of the gate in 91 hasn’t changed their minds and anyone who liked them still enjoys them, in terms of the hard cores.

But beyond that, what is GN’R remembered for in the mainstream? SCOM, Jungle, PC, YCBM, KOHD, NR and a fifteen year wait for an album generally considered by the mainstream to be subpar.

I would argue that GN’R in general and AFD doesn’t have the cultural importance (beyond 80s nostalgia) that they did as a contemporary artistic force that they did in 2002 or even 2006.

They’re squarely a nostalgia act, one whose appeal diminishes more and more with time as we move further and further from the “hair metal” era, which they’re associated with even though GNR was not hair metal

GNR’s first performance of the 90s, and their last with Steven

Did anyone here watch this live back in April 1990, if so, what was your thoughts on it at the time?

Were Steven’s problems apparent watching it? Were rumors swirling about him in that pre internet age?

If I’m not mistaken, the show came before Civil War was actually released (This was April 90, wasn’t the Nobody’s Child released in June 1990?), and it was also the first performance of Down on the Farm which wouldn’t be released for 3 1/2 years on TSI

Thoughts on it then, thoughts now on this final performance by the AFD lineup?

Even to this day despite the semi reunion, it sadly remains the last time all 5 have been together on the same stage at the same time

I’d take whatever with Ax vocals at this point if they were good vocals

Jams with Adam Maples, Martin Chambers etc early 1990

I've always wanted to see this.... IF it exists. I don't remember if it was recorded.  I know they recorded at least one of the Sorum rehearsals because it was mentioned in an issue of either RIP or Circus.

The “Perfect Crime” footage 1991-1993

Pro shots of every concept 1991-1993

We're never getting The Perfect Crime. It would be a massive project...and it's crystal clear that there's no one involved who is interested in tackling such a project.

It would be a bigger undertaking than the Beatles Get Back project...and it took an A list directors interest in that to make it happen.

As far as all the shows recorded, the most we will ever get is a couple cherry picked shows...more than likely shows already heard(Tokyo, Chicago,etc.).

This isn't Metallica or Pink Floyd where everyone involved is interested in going through the vault. The GNR camp literally goes years on end without doing anything substantial in this regard.

Can you imagine the GNR camp spending a couple years working on that?!?

Neither can I....

This stuff needed to have been dug through, separate the gnat shit from the pepper, bring in a team to work on the 30 year old footage, clear the various rights with ex members, etc years ago...just to get us anywhere close to this becoming a reality.

Honestly, if I could, I’d do that for free. Seriously. I’d happily work as the band’s archivist for fuckin free if it meant you, me and others could hear or see cool stuff

I’m not saying they’re actually ashamed but,

Axl and co sit on tons and tons and tons of shit. Maybe most of it would only be of interest to die hards like ourselves, but it still would be of interest.

Like:

Pre GNR demos, 1983-1984

GNR prototype demos 1985

Early sessions and such, 1985

Live footage 1985-1986

Pro shot footage 88-89

Interviews 86-89

Pre UYI and UYI recording and rehearsals Chicago 89, Mates 89, early 90

Jams with Adam Maples, Martin Chambers etc early 1990

Gilby’s auditions, 1991

The “Perfect Crime” footage 1991-1993

Pro shots of every concept 1991-1993

Sketches / demos / rehearsals 1992-2008

Curios like Zakk Wylde sessions January 1995, Izzy/Duff April 1995

Maybe all of what I’ve listed either doesn’t exist anymore, or the band isn’t aware of it if it does. But let’s say that even half of what I’ve listed does indeed exist. This band loves money -

They could easily put up a “UYI Show A Month”, release every surviving pro shot show, every single month or every six months or every year and charge for it, and they’d make money. Say they released one show a year - that’s fuckin 100 years worth of shows to make money off of! And we, the fans, would benefit. And their legacy would benefit

They could put out a series of box sets with the stuff I’ve outlined here, the minor shit and curiosities - and honestly, just spend the rest of their lives spitting out box sets of deep deep cut type shit -

And make money

After a while “laziness” doesn’t really cut it as an excuse for the band not doing Jack shit with the mountains of audio and footage they have on hand; it could easily be monetized.

So, if it’s not laziness, what is it?

Why don’t GNR seem to really give a shit about their past outside of Appetite for Destruction and skull iconography?

It’s the closest GNR came to a pure pop rock song, a tender love song…written about Izzy’s then love of heroin!

It’s the sole 100% Izzy song on AFD

What are your opinions on it?

It was played live at least once in 1986 (The Whiskey, August 23). So it already had lyrics then, although they didn't record a demo of it with vocals (or, at least, no demo with vocals from that time has been released or circulated).

Then it was indeed going to be on UYI. A rough mix of it with vocals is found on the "Axl's Advance Copy" bootleg from the 90s (the dates of the mixes on that bootleg are unknown). That version was obviously with Izzy.

It was included in a letter from ASCAP to radio/TV stations in April 1991 (prohibiting the broadcast of leaked tracks from UYI sessions):

http://www.troccolitm.com/UYIPressKit5.JPG

According to Matt Sorum, part of it was recorded in Wisconsin at the time the UYI tour started:

Matt: I do actually, I do remember [The Alpine Valley shows in May 1991].  [...] When we played Alpine Valley we hadn’t released the “Illusions” records yet and we actually finished a couple of the songs on the album over there in Wisconsin, there was a recording studio (Royal Recorders, Lake Geneva) and I remember me and Duff had to go in there and do background vocals and I think Axl had to sing a lead vocal. We did a song called “Don’t Damn Me” and another song called “Ain’t Goin Down” which is actually only on the Guns N’ Roses pinball machine so I remember all that stuff yeah (laughs). [Legendary Rock Interviews, March 17, 2014]

Then Slash said in 1992 that they were thinking of putting it on what would become The Spaghetti Incident, mentioning that the lyrics and vocals weren't finished:

Slash: As far as the Punk thing goes, there’s gonna be a new song on there that we didn’t finish for ‘Use Your Illusion’. It’s finished as far as all the backing tracks were done, but we didn’t finish the words. It’s called ‘Ain’t Going Down’ and it’s one of those songs that we wrote in the streets in Hollywood just walking around. [Raw Magazine, March 4, 1992]

I don't recall Gilby talking about playing on it, and maybe he did play on it when they were recording songs for Spaghetti while on tour. The above quote from Slash, though, doesn't suggest that they intended to have Gilby play on it.

And then it ended up being used for the pinball machine. Slash again mentioned that the vocals were not finished:

Slash: There’s a song called Ain’t Going Down, which we just never finished, and we have a chorus for it, so I figure we’d use that [on the pinball machine], you know, and finally get it out there. So now that we’ve done it we have to actually record it. [MTV, November 11, 1994]

Gilby was out of the band when the pinball machine was released (and a year later he sued GN'R for using his name and likeness on it).

The version we have from the UYI sessions sounds like a completed song, but maybe Axl wanted to write more lyrics on it.

I had written Gilby on Twitter at a point a few years ago about this. He said that that was the last song the lineup of the band which included him worked on. That they never “quite for that one right”

Axl’s vox on the Pinball version sound like his higher pitched mid 90s vocals too
