#671 Re: Guns N' Roses » Hard School leak » 374 weeks ago

Okay, here's my take on the lyrics:

[instrumental intro/Fuzzy Guitar/Drum Ride]
[Verse]
All cautions made
Every chance was given
No effort spared
To save what we had
All in good faith
I would not hesitate
To extend myself
And lend you my hand

[Chorus]
But when we do it, had to do it your way
Had to be a fool, had to throw it all away
Too hard school and you thought you were here to stay
If that were true it wouldn't matter anyway

[Verse 2]
As tempers fade
And lies forgiven
No cause embraced
Could break what we had
In its place
A storm is lifting
I would've thought you could be more of a man

[Chorus]
But when we do it, had to do it your way
Had to be a fool, had to throw it all away
Too hard school and you thought you were here to stay
If that were true it wouldn't matter anyway

[Solo]

[Chorus x2]
But when we do it, had to do it your way
Had to be a fool, had to throw it all away
Too hard school and you thought you were here to stay
If that were true it wouldn't matter anyway

Too hard school and you thought you were here to stay
If that were true it wouldn't matter anyway

Not sure about the lines in bold...

Anyone worked out the lyrics yet?

Since the storage locker CDs have changed hands several times that we know of (possibly many times that we *don't* know of), there's no telling who a leak might eventually come from.

There's still a pretty clear chain of ownership there, though. Combining a bit of data forensics and circumstantial evidence (eg location data), it would be childishly simple for law enforcement to narrow things down to the actual leaker. It doesn't help that the guy who bought the discs was posting about it all over social media.

At the moment he's stuck in a sort of legal limbo where he's the legal owner of the discs, having bought them fair and square, but the minute any of the material from them hits the internet, he's ground zero for an IP theft lawsuit.

And no, it doesn't really matter if someone else leaks the material, if they can trace that person's leak back to the one individual they know has the discs. Which they can.

There seems to be a general concensus that hard school kicks ass.

The 35 seconds we've heard kicks a lot of ass. Might be up there with TWAT for best song of the CD sessions.

Well, based on what we've heard, yes. Although given Axl's tendency to chuck umpteen different riffs into a song, for all we know it takes a hard left into Brazilian samba mid-way through the track.

Aagh, I go to sleep and a leak happens. Anyone got it? EDIT nvm found the discord. Checkmate/Hardschool/Jackie Chan is a beast, we need the full version asap.

I need that re-recorded AFD that was supposedly purchased in the haul.

Of course, the other unheard "new" songs would be great to hear as well.

Holy shit, the AFD re-record is out there? That's my holy grail.

Wow, the re-recorded AFD is your holy grail? Slash and Izzy’s guitars replaced by the subpar Robin Finck and Paul Huge...?

Apples and oranges for some folk huh

Yeah, it is. At least partly because it is likely never going to be released. Atlas Shrugged, Soul Monster, Thyme... anything from the Chinese Democracy sessions is at least a candidate for being re-recorded with Slash and Duff. It's a possibility we'll hear them in some form down the line.

But the AFD re-record, with the 1999-era band that had already been supplanted by the Buckethead-era band when CD was still in the process of being recorded? That's going to be locked in Axl's vault until the end of time. With Slash and Duff back, there's no incentive for the band to ever release it, even as a curio. And going by the SCOM re-record it had a (then) contemporary polish and Axl's vocals were on beast mode. So yeah, I'm intrigued to hear it.

I'm honestly more interested in hearing AFD '99 than the new songs – I'm (fairly) confident we'll eventually hear Atlas Shrugged with Slash and Duff at some point, so the CD-era version is more of a curio. AFD '99 is genuinely fascinating, though, and the tiny snippet of SCOM we've heard intrigues me.

Supposedly, 15 CDs were purchased through an industry contact.

The material is all from The Village, pre-Bucket, and the re-recorded AFD is amongst what was recovered.

Others include:

  • Jackie Chan / Hard School / Checkmate

  • Soul Monster / Leave Me Alone

  • Oklahoma / Berlin

  • Atlas Shrugged

  • Zodiac (2 versions)

  • Thyme

  • Goin' Down (Tommy only)

  • AFD rerecorded
    -

  • Perhaps

  • Billionare

  • Rebel

  • Dummy

  • Dozens of instrumentals

Sounds like Bumblefoot-era if I'm any judge - that heavy strummed acoustic just conjures up that period to me...
