#631 Re: Guns N' Roses » BRIAN JOHNSON: 'I Had A Great Run' With AC/DC » 380 weeks ago
A new (perhaps final) AC/DC album, with Axl as the lead singer, would be phenomenal. Not only would it allow the band to go out with a proper goodbye, but it would allow Axl to finally write and record without the burden - self-imposed or otherwise - of making a GNR album.
We've already seen how his perspective as a fan prompted the band to revive some old songs that they'd retired. He could do the same thing in the recording studio, reminding Angus, most of all, of who he used to be back when he first became a musician.
God bless Brian. He was a phenomenon, and none of us can imagine the pressure of replacing Bon. I'm getting choked up, thinking of all the great songs he's given us. A terrific talent.

man, all that beautiful artwork and we get a big fuckin' sepia toned basket.
i remember this fake from back in the day:
https://static.stereogum.com/blogs.dir/ … 00x300.jpg
i always pictured the final album would look something like that.
the colors of red and orange were always in my mind with the cover.
btw -- that street of dreams single artwork is amateur hour. still can't believe that's real.
A bootleg CD used that as cover art. If I remember correctly, it surfaced in early 2008, not long before the official album release.
I'm pretty sure the "Street of Dreams" promo single is legit. When it shows up for sale, it goes for a fortune.

All four of the major Washington bands have lost a lead singer, even Pearl Jam when you consider that Andrew Wood's death ended Mother Love Bone but gave birth to Temple of the Dog and PJ. AIC persists but it's not the same. I live within driving distance of Seattle, and the local rumors about Layne's last days, and the condition in which he was found, just crushed me.
I was lucky enough to see Soundgarden's first arena show, back at the Bumbershoot music festival in 1990. It was like watching a new king take the throne. The band had one t-shirt for sale that night, the one with Kim's grinning, happy face on the front and "TOTAL FUCKING GODHEAD" on the back. Now the memory just makes me sad.
That Kurt's death killed the local scene is absolutely true. Yes, successful new bands and hit songs have come out of this area since then, but when he died the glue that bound it all together seemed to disappear. What had been a community felt more like a bunch of independent entities without a unifying force.

ClaudeF wrote:The Neurotic Outsiders album is great fun from start to finish. The timing was bad: Steve went back to the Sex Pistols and that was the end of the project, but the CD captures the fun of their live shows, and is really inexpensive to buy.
Yeah, I love this album. It has the some fat rock sound that TSI has, and some great drumming from Matt on there too
Agreed. I got the sense Matt really felt like he could cut loose. Plus, the chemistry between the four of them was palpable. They really liked each other a ton.
I've seen Duff with 10 Minute Warning, Presidents of the United States of America, and Loaded. Every single time he's been terrific, but I've never gotten the same impression of him feeling as happy to be on stage with a bunch of people.

A kid at work had what he called "The Leaked Chinese Democracy" that he downloaded from Napster or some shit, and burned me a copy of what was, essentially demos and live shit with OMG to boot.
Better
TWAT
IRS
Catcher
The Blues
CD
RATB
Silkworms
OMGMy fucking god. Popping that CD into my car stereo and hearing Better for the first time was like a religious experience.
Imagine.
Remember?
I didn't even get a PC/ an internet connection for like...2 or 3 more years.
But that VMA tape and bootleg CD got me through.
I still have the CD in my truck.
That story takes me right back. Around 1999 - 2000 you could find GNR bootleg CDs on eBay for really low prices, because the band was considered pretty much dead. I filled in some gaps in my collection (like the Perkins Palace gig) and focused on the old days, not even aware of the Chinese Democracy sessions let alone the VMA performance, which I'd never even heard about until afterward. I attended the Tacoma 2002 gig, briefly hoped for it to be a sign of much more to come, but when the tour got cancelled I figured Axl was back to being a hermit.
Then, around 2005 somebody on a Nirvana forum posted a comment about "IRS" leaking but I didn't find it for another year. Eventually I tracked down the first batch of leaked demos ("TWAT" long and short versions, "Better," "Catcher," and "IRS" plus the associated instrumental versions).
You're entirely right: Hearing that early version of "Better," with the "I know you know you know better" bridge, was life-changing. I listed to it over and over again for a good hour straight that first night I found it. The MSL and Skwerl leaks that followed were icing on the cake, additional clues to Axl's imagination and creative process. What a ride it's been.
#636 Re: Guns N' Roses » BUCKETHEAD Finally Explains Why He Has A Dang Bucket on His Head » 381 weeks ago
Bucket's been so generous with the free music, and provided such inspiration to Axl at a time when he really needed it. I hope he overcomes the health issues and even finds a way to reconnect with GNR. The man is a true original.
#637 Re: Guns N' Roses » "Oh My God" on End of Days (Clean version) CD - different? » 381 weeks ago
anything cool in the booklet of the cd?
Not really. It's funny, in recent years I've gotten the impression that GNR's management and/or label thought the song would be much more popular. If they wanted it to be a bigger hit, they should have produced a video - MTV still played them in those days. They also should have issued it as a single. Instead, it seemed to get buried - unfairly, but still buried.

I have the "Parental Advisory" version of the End of Days soundtrack and am curious how the "Clean version" of the CD deals with the f-bomb in "Oh My God." Is there a bleeping sound? a dropout of the vocal? I can't imagine Axl recorded an alternate lyric so there must be something in that spot to cover it up. Or did it slip past the censors?
#639 Re: Guns N' Roses » LEAKS THREAD » 381 weeks ago
"Madagascar" was one of the first Chinese Democracy songs I heard performed in concert, at the Tacoma gig back in 2002. Axl introduced it as "Mad at NASCAR." He was in a terrific mood that night!
If we do get a new crop of demos, outtakes, and alternate versions to mark the 10th anniversary of Chinese Democracy, it'll be a wonderful year!
#640 Re: Guns N' Roses » Are we still gettig the blues 01 for xmas since the madagascar 01 » 381 weeks ago
I'm hopeful there will be some official recognition of the tenth anniversary of Chinese Democracy. The leadup to its release was so intense. The years of waiting, rumors, and then the reality of it coming out one Sunday morning! I keep a sealed copy by my desk at work, just to remind me of those heady days.
