#51 Guns N' Roses » What Steven brought to GNR » 94 weeks ago

In a thread about AC/DC trying to find a new drummer for their PowerTrip show, somebody said this about Phil. The same could be true of Steven:

“ Rudd is so awesome because he swings. That's why Back in Black album, for instance, gets the ladies dancing. None of the replacement drummers have that quality. It't not about power.”

Matt’s work on UYI was great but the band’s ultimate legacy still rests on Appetite and the groove that Steven created.

Since we’re all expecting/worrying/accepting that the end may be near for GNR if they sabotage the release of “The General” by making it vinyl-only (let’s hope the “Atlas” rumors are true) I find myself contemplating that GNR may become a thing of the past.

I am certain they would launch a successful farewell tour that ultimately is no different than the current gravy train tour. But my expectations are diminishing to not hoping for more beyond that. I’m left sifting through what they actually accomplished, what they may have in the archives, and the reality that they may never write another new song.

I hope Steven has found some peace and knows how much his work is appreciated.

Steve in particular writes a lot of songs about history especially British military history. Maybe that is the “political” thing?

Maiden seems to be the model for how a hard rock band should conduct itself. They have their side projects but give their all to the group. I last saw them in 2019 and the shows were incredible.

Earlier in this thread people were discussing Axl’s voice and the fact he is writing lyrics/arrangements that don’t give him a moment to breathe.

Now he’s had to address the issue online:

He needs to share some of the work with Duff and/or Melissa. Let them handle some vocals (like every-other verse in the chorus of “Perhaps”). Nobody has the lung capacity for those bursts of words, and by letting others sing more it will feel more like a band (like we got in “Goin’ Down”).

It’s remarkable how quickly our shock and happiness about getting “The General” has turned into disappointment at the idea they might bury the song.

In my maybe 18 years on GNR forums I’ve never encountered such a level of emotional exhaustion. There had been periods of frustration but they were balanced by hope.

It’s like that theory about the stages of death. We’re reaching acceptance. The band should be actually frightened about what is to come if they fuck up.

They need to release a bunch of music and get behind it, before the end of this year.

On the upside, if they don’t, in about two or three years GNR stuff will once again plummet in value, and we will see the kinds of great deals we saw in 1998 — 1999. Lots of great deals on the horizon if they drop the ball.

I hope they don’t drop the ball.

I don’t know if he is capable of writing songs anymore. Or interested in doing so. He hasn’t given us any indication of either.

I want whatever is left in the ChiDem archives and am willing to pay to hear it — preferably the band but to hoarders if necessary.

After that I am done. There is no more history being made by this band. I am grateful to them (as well as Steven, Izzy, Matt, Pitman, and the rest). But the show is over.

Let’s hope the vinyl-only rumors are false.

Release a ton of ChiDem outtakes as limited-edition vinyl on Record Store Day.

Include lossless download cards.

Call the series Gn’Rchives.

Bonus points: Give the money to the people of Maui who lost their homes and loved ones.

Just end the drip-feed craziness already.

Or “Radioland Murders”!

Let’s hope it is NOT true.

So, here’s a translation of the article:

Announced at the same time as the August 18 release of the unreleased "Perhaps", and included in the vinyl version of the same single, available from October 27, "The General" - the new song by Guns N' Roses - will not appear, unlike of the first, on streaming platforms nor will it be purchasable digitally. This was reported to Radio Rock by the same internal sources who had revealed to us the postponement of the aforementioned last single from the 11th to the 18th of last month.

Guns N' Roses: "The General" will be released only in physical version
The song - also dating back to the studio sessions of the latest "Chinese Democracy", 2008 - will be available only and exclusively by purchasing the 7" vinyl of "Perhaps": the last single signed by Axl Rose and companions, released on August 18 also accompanied by its official video clip, and published in physical format on October 27th. Interviewed by Rolling Stone in 2007, the former Skid Row frontman – Sebastian Bach – had thus spoken of the song: “It is by far the most heavy metal thing I have ever heard him do. There's this slow, screeching riff mixed with these high, deep, screaming vocals." Intercepted again a year later by the same magazine, the singer had added: “It is the sequel to 'Estranged', and is part of the trilogy written by Del James (whose stories inspired the video for 'November Rain'). He's like the George Lucas of rock."

My hope is music we’ve not heard before with as little new stuff from Duff and Slash as possible.

They are great but so far their contributions haven’t fit well at all. Give us the original vision.
