#5731 Re: The Garden » The NFL 2007-08 Season thread » 922 weeks ago
Maybe he was joking, but gregarious Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder confessed today he didn't know until Tuesday that people spoke English in London.
Crowder, a former Florida Gator and Atlanta native, apparently isn't sure where the plane is headed when it takes off this afternoon for Sunday's game against the New York Giants in Wembley Stadium.
'I couldn't find London on a map if they didn't have the names of the countries,' Crowder said. 'I swear to God. I don't know what nothing is. I know Italy looks like a boot. I learned that.
'I know (Washington Redskins linebacker) London Fletcher. We did a football camp together. So I know him. That's the closest thing I know to London. He's black, so I'm sure he's not from London. I'm sure that's a coincidental name.'
When reminded Dolphins practice squad receiver and NFL Europe veteran Marvin Allen is from London, Crowder's standup routine didn't miss a beat.
'He's from London?' Crowder said. 'I knew he was from over there because he talks funny. I was surprised (when they met) because '” I don't want to say he didn't look the part because that's a stereotype '” but he didn't look the part. I heard him talk, and I thought he had a recorder and was just mouthing.
#5732 The Garden » US Imposes New Sanctions On Iran » 922 weeks ago

The US has stepped up its sanctions on Iran for "supporting terrorists" and pursuing nuclear activities.
The new measures target the finances of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps and three state-owned banks.
The guards force was established after the Islamic revolution in 1979
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the moves were part of "a comprehensive policy to confront the threatening behaviour of the Iranians".
But Iran said the latest "hostile policies" were counter to international law, and accused the US of hypocrisy.
The US declared the Revolutionary Guards a "proliferator of weapons of mass destruction", a reference to ballistic missiles they are allegedly developing, while their elite overseas operations arm, the Quds Force, was singled out as a "supporter of terrorism".
The US has repeatedly accused Iran of destabilising Iraq and Afghanistan, blaming the Revolutionary Guards for supplying and training insurgents.
'Illicit activities'
Ms Rice accused Iran of a litany of abuses, including pursuing technologies "that can lead to a nuclear weapon", building ballistic missiles, and spurning peace talks.
She said Iran was supporting militants in Iraq and "terrorists" in Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon and the Palestinian territories, and said Iran had threatened to destroy Israel.
Under Executive Order 13382, US authorities will be able to freeze the assets of, and prohibit any US citizen or organisation from doing business with the Revolutionary Guards.
Iran's ministry of defence, which controls the country's defence industry, three Iranian banks, and several companies owned by the Guards will also be designated.
"These actions will help to protect the international financial system from the illicit activities of the Iranian government," Ms Rice said.
The British government said it "endorsed" the move, but it was condemned by Iran's foreign ministry.
"The hostile policies of America against the respectful Iranian nation and our legal organisations are against international regulations and have no value," the state broadcaster IRIB quoted a spokesman as saying.
"It is incongruent for a country who itself is a producer of weapons of mass destruction to take such a decision. A country that has created and supported many terrorist groups cannot obstruct the course of development, progress and prosperity for the Iranian nation nor can it do so for our country's legitimate institutions," said Mohammad Ali Hosseini.
Analysts said it was not clear how big an effect the sanctions would have, since the Guards probably had very limited assets in the US. However, they said the move might discourage other countries from dealing with the Iranian institutions.
The Guards' Quds Force was singled out after being accused by US officials of supplying powerful roadside bombs and rocket-propelled grenades to Shia militants in Iraq.
Thought to have 15,000 troops, it is responsible for conducting covert missions overseas and for forging relationships with other Shia groups.
"The Quds Force controls the policy for Iraq," the top US military commander in Iraq, Gen David Petraeus, said earlier this month. "There should be no confusion about that."
Dominant force
The Revolutionary Guards force was set up shortly after the 1979 Iranian revolution to defend the country's Islamic system, and to provide a counterweight to the regular armed forces.
It has since become the dominant military force in Iran, with past members including President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and a number of his cabinet ministers.
It is estimated to have 125,000 active members, and boasts its own ground forces, navy and air force, and controls Iran's strategic weapons.
It also controls the paramilitary Basij Resistance Force and the powerful bonyads, or charitable foundations, which run a considerable part of the Iranian economy.
REVOLUTIONARY GUARDS
- Officially the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), or Pasdaran
- Formed after 1979 revolution
- Loyal to clerics and counter to regular military
- Estimated 125,000 troops
- Includes ground forces, navy, air force, intelligence and special forces
- Also has political influence: dozens of ex-guard sit as MPs
- Iran President Ahmadinejad is a former member

Anyone else watch this show...? It started a few months ago on the BBC over here in the UK, but it's been around quite a while longer and is supposedly the most watched on US TV by adults aged 20-49.
A few weeks ago I watched the entire first series online during a weekend, if there are any other Sci-Fi fans/Geeks on ROV I recommend you check it out....

The funny thing about that site is, most of the links didn't work... It was a terrible site.
If they shut down Stage6 or Veoh, then it would be a dark day for movie bootlegs...

^ Then again you can say Slash has commented on "Chinese Democracy" more than anyone else in the band....

Since some people will presumably be interested...
kind of a chicken/egg situation. has beta's craziness made things worse for axl or did axl's craziness make things worse for beta? perhaps we'll never know. i will say this, i learned a lot during those bizarre conversations with her. always been good at reading people, which is why i was able to get the songs to begin with. beta's decision making seemed to be based on fear, desperation, and paranoia. definitely seemed to act without thinking. the fact that she went on the message boards to get my phone number so she could call me to yell at me was strange enough in and of itself. i doubt i got in more than a few words in any of the convos, including the one that was a few hours long. just a total stream of conciousness rant on her part telling me ten years of gnr's dirty laundry. who the fuck does that? why would you tell a total stranger so much of the band's business, especially a total stranger you're apparantly furious at for discovering new material?
with everything that was going on, and according to her, axl being very concerned that i was about to leak the whole album, i really was baffled by the topics of the conversation, most of which had nothing to do with leaks. 99% of what was said was about slash and this intense jealousy axl/beta seem to have with how slash is portrayed in the media. beta explained that slash is an asshole, but knows how to charm the press and axl has always struggled with staying on the presses good side, so the press unfairly paints him as the bad guy in the split. she insisted it was true that slash showed up at axl's house to try to rejoin the band and then lied to the press about it to save his ass. she went on and on about how slash will continually apologize in private for being such an asshole and won't leave axl alone, but publically, it's a different story.
definite mindset of the fans are the enemy. on one of the calls i could have sworn i heard axl telling her stuff to say to me, but i can't be sure it was him coaching her call. "axl doesn't owe the fans anything. they need to leave him alone. they've ruined his life." etc. etc. lots of stuff like that. lots of intense anger with the fanbase expecting too much, not understanding "axl's process" and what not. "the fans need to get a life. the album will come out when it comes out."
lots of venom for merck as well. beta/axl/gnr were convinced he was ultimately responsible for the leaks and claimed there was something about the versions of the songs i had that could be traced back to a disc only given to merck for the purposes of playing it for the record company. something about merck needing to meet with the label while gnr was doing the hammerstein stint and being given a disc with certain mixes and those were the mixes i had. she explained the whole process of how nobody in the band can take home recordings and every CD ever made is tracked and CDs are only made when absolutely necessary.
the funniest part about dealing with gnr was that i was 100% honest with them at all times and bent over backwards to try to help them, but the bureaucracy made it nearly impossible to help them and they wasted precious time arguing amongst themselves about what to do with me. beta claimed universal wanted to come after me and axl was trying to stop them because if universal got involved, gnr would never get my help. many weeks went by before i ultimately was able to send them the information they wanted due to nobody in the camp being able to make a decision.
in the end, they really didn't keep their word on anything and maybe as time goes by, i won't be as willing to keep mine.
which reminds me, apparantly axl was very determined to keep the fans in the know for now on, but the negative reaction to his letter hurt his feelings so bad that beta said he couldn't read the boards anymore and changed his mind about being so open. the fact that it will soon be 2008 and we still won't have any word on what is going on makes me wonder what they will do when people who are holding stuff back give up and release.
having had my lawyer look over my agreement before i posted this, i realize now that gnr breached almost every single aspect of the deal. i really hadn't looked at the thing in a while.

Wow, I'm surprised by all the Saw hate. You guys must really hate american horror this decade, because its the best horror movie yet.
There are several Asian films that were far superior to Saw... A pity people don't like subtitles.
