Yeah, those 3 are awful. Take them out, add in Hard School & Going Down, you're going somewhere. I get it they probably didn't fit, but redo The Blues to more piano rock, and CITR to a better produced song, as well as 1 or 2 more tweaked to more rock friendly, and its a better album. Swap in 1 more track with another and its a better album.
I agree those 3 bring it down, 2 or 3 more keep it irrelevant. We're down to about 5 good songs, some of which probably still needed to be redone.
I suspect they're in there because someone (management, Axl, the record company) wanted more up-tempo rock stuff. Atlas Shrugged and Perhaps are better songs than those three, but the trouble is they're more ballad-type tracks.

The other two (Sorry, Prostitute) on "Sorry" the demo has no vocal track so I had to include it even though the demo's instrumental blows the finished version out of the water. Prostitute, despite the weird stuff like the incredible SNES RPG outro was too raw and missing Buckethead's godtier work so it couldn't be included.
Couldn't you just plop the vocals from the Rock Band multitracks onto the instrumental demo of Sorry? Sure, it'd be a Frankenstein's monster and not a "real" demo, but needs must...

Ah, we've reached the "Chinese Democracy wasn't that good, actually" stage of its life cycle. It'll come back around.
For most of the tracks, I'm inclined to agree that one or other of the leaks was better. The Blues should never have had that sappy acoustic intro slapped on it. The versions of Chinese Democracy and IRS - from the storage unit batch - are much more raw and energetic than the final product, though both could've done with the Buckethead solos for a little extra stardust. I much prefer the leaked version of If The World. They should've kept the Brian May solo on Catcher. The first (second?) leak of TWAT was the best, with the jangly guitar in the chorus, the strummed bits higher in the mix under the "yeah there was a time..." vocals and the full-length Bucket outro.
Still a perfectly good album though.

I love the demo version that dropped recently. That bit where Axl repeats "If the world would end and our love slipped away" instead of the "Way-ay-ay" echo, those extra Bucket licks in the outro... so much better than the album version.

It's actually not that strange when you think about it. I suspect Axl wasn't really running a "parallel GN'R" with people like Sid Riggs and Gary Sunshine; they were there to lay down tracks on Axl's demos that he was presenting to the band. Remember, Axl's a singer and pianist, not a guitarist or a drummer; he's also a bit of a perfectionist. I could envision a scenario where he's thinking, "I've got an idea for a song with a riff that goes 'Ba-danga-danga-chugga-TWANG' but I can't play the guitar and drum parts myself. Before I present it to Slash and Duff I want to make sure it sounds good, so I'll get these session guys to work it up as a demo..."
Tobias obviously did contribute song ideas because at that point Axl saw him as Izzy's replacement, and a full member of the band.

James, I’m probably biased as the board’s resident Metallica fan, but that best of Load/Reload you threw together is pretty crap. Outlaw Torn and Bleeding Me are two of the best 90’s tracks, and highly regarded by Metallica fans, too. Better Than You is rubbish as well. To say it’s one of the best, while omitting two of their best, I find it hard to take your opinion seriously... haha
Which goes back to my point, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Even Shotgun Blues
No Unforgiven II? Get in the fucking sea.

I hate these 'album' box sets. It's become a cash grab. Just release a box set for the band as a whole and be done with it. Just look at the Pearl Jam 10 or Nirvana In Utero remixes, they sound pretty much the same. Even In Utero, Steve Albini handed in a muddy album which the label was rumored to have trashed and said 'There's no hits' and it was fully remixed.
What happened, it comes out, and to me, its still pretty similar. UYI would be interesting, but I'm not really interested in hearing many of the songs again, and outside of any legendary remixes or rerecordings, it couldve been morphed into 1 Guns box set.
UYI's an interesting one though, 'cos Slash has alluded to an early version of the album without all of Axl's layered production stuff on top of it. I'd be curious to hear what that sounds like, and that'd cheerfully fill up a disc of material. Plus there's a (slim) chance there could be early demos of stuff like TIL, Fall To Pieces etc from the UYI sessions.

Agree. I imagine anything and everything is on the table at this point. I just hope it somehow sounds more coherent musically than Chinese did. Chinese is nothing more than a compilation album culled from the recording sessions done from 98-08.
Yup, I mean we know for a fact that they've rehearsed Hardschool, and tbh that's not the first track that springs to mind from the Chinese Democracy sessions when you think "I could imagine Slash playing this."

Sky Dog wrote:ID, I love you brother, but the Brain Bucket ship has sailed. 20 years ago that stuff was hatched! Let it go....if that stuff comes out it will be on Super Deluxe Chinese boxset download upload inject whatever form of medium is used 10 years from now.
Oh I get you, I'm just saying there might not be a whole of material they can just re-record, at least that would fit this band.
I mean, I would've agreed, up until the point when the new band started playing the likes of Better, Madagascar and Prostitute on tour. It's weird, 'cos they're not even the Chinese Democracy tracks that resemble the work of the old band; like, I could've seen them playing I.R.S. or Street of Dreams, but not Prostitute or Madagascar.
That, plus the fact that the band's historically used material from a pool of writers including former bandmates and friends (even back during the AFD/UYI days) suggests that pretty much anything from the Chinese Democracy sessions could be on the table.
