The Rocketeer. Just a great 30s pulp adventure in the Indiana Jones mould. But it came out the same week as Terminator 2 and got absolutely buried at the box office...
#542 Re: Guns N' Roses » New Slash - Theme from “Love Story” » 312 weeks ago
I'm at the point now where whenever any GN'R member releases a solo thing, all I think is - what about a new GN'R release?
It's become the elephant in the room now. Since the reunion both Slash and Duff have done a solo release each. Now Slash has another due out in 2021. This would all be fine but the expectation has been set that there will be new Guns music at some point - if so, where is it? At the least where is some news on it?
If there isn't going to be any new Guns songs for the next few years or ever, that is also fine IF they actually say something about it. Having Slash and Duff do interviews the past year or two saying something is actually in the works and having Duff's wife on podcasts talking about it just makes it feel like fans are being led on.
As I've said repeatedly and often, the new album is effectively a piece of promo for the tour. If they can't tour because of COVID, what's the point in releasing the album?

They had to try; no one knew whether people would go see a film in cinemas until someone took the plunge. And there was almost certainly pressure from the director, who's very big on the "cinema experience, shoot on film instead of digital" thing. I went to see it at an IMAX and, while it was fun, and I did enjoy having the cinema experience again, the whole audience felt a bit on edge. I don't see cinemas or other venues getting back to anything approaching normal until there's a vaccine.

This lady's bloody impressive on the guitar. Nails a note-perfect cover of Soothsayer without breaking into a sweat, and her original stuff is very much in the Buckethead mould. Maybe Axl should hire her...
#545 Re: Guns N' Roses » You are the new manager of Gn'R, what do you do? » 316 weeks ago
Some sort of new content to promote the tour. Either a best-of with a couple of new tracks, or an EP, or a new album. Ideally a new album. Drop it out of nowhere on streaming services one day, like Beyoncé or Eminem do, it'd generate crazy press.
Get serious about releasing old gigs on YouTube. None of this pissing around releasing three or four songs from NITL shows and worrying that putting out official footage of Matt Sorum or Izzy will delegitimize the current band. Do what Metallica does. A release every week for a few months. Treat it as a journey through an exciting archive; have Axl or Slash or Duff or whoever record little intros setting the scene, like Lars does.
Once there's a new album out, feel free to draw on every era of the band, it won't affect the current band one iota. Ritz 88, overblown UYI gigs, Skin N' Bones tour, House of Blues with Bucket... fan-cam releases with remastered soundboard audio - fuck it, put everything out there. You're not going to make money off DVD releases anymore, the content is just mouldering in the vault at this point.
They have to own their past and stop running from it. Yeah, a biopic would probably focus on the AFD/UYI years and chart the break-up of the band. So fucking what? Bohemian Rhapsody ended with the death of the lead singer and it's revitalised Queen for the younger generation.
At some point down the line, do those UYI and Chinese Democracy box sets just to shut the fans up.
I wouldn't go so far as to do a residency with the AFD line-up - that really would delegitimize the current band. But an AFD/UYI themed residency where they bring on Gilby or Izzy or Adler or Matt (hell, why not Tracey and Roberta too?) for the odd guest spot might not be a bad idea.

So I guess the big question is, who would you want to see in Frank's place? Accept that Matt and Adler are no-gos; Brain is presumably busy raising his family and not down for touring. Josh Freese is a session guy and not interested in touring. Brent Fitz, maybe?
#547 Re: Guns N' Roses » Richard Fortus interview - Blabbermouth.net » 316 weeks ago
Frank doesn’t suck at all. Good news he isn’t a crack head or an asshole. I think he is solid. Sorry, but NOBODY outside of extreme hardcores gives a shit who the drummer of Gnr is.
I'm inclined to agree. Frank is professional, he gets the job done, he seems like a nice guy. I can think of others I'd like to see drumming for GN'R – Brain, for one – but I don't get the hate-on people have for Frank. I don't think either of the previous GN'R drummers is a realistic prospect; Adler is seen as too flaky to carry a major tour, and Matt's well and truly burned his bridges with that book. So even in the unlikely event that GN'R were to boot Frank (and remember, Axl values loyalty), you're never going to get that mythical AFD/UYI line-up tour.

Huh, interesting that he sort of backs up Matt Sorum's take on the whole Duff/Frank chemistry, or (initial) lack thereof.
#549 Re: Guns N' Roses » Tracks on the album better than the Rough Mixes » 320 weeks ago
Yeah that's a good post but I don't believe Sorry isn't about Slash. It's pretty obvious. If he didn't want people jumping to that conclusion or not buying his denial, maybe he shouldn't have spent years pissing and moaning about him. Hell...even Beta was obsessed with him to the point she would spend hours talking about him on the phone with MSL.
It's about Slash. It also sounds like it's aimed at fans too.
Axl literally said it's not about Slash.

James wrote:AgesOfTheIce wrote:I kinda disagree with this. I think what makes Axl a great songwriter is how personal he is, and we know his hatred of Slash was a major obsession of his for almost two decades. I would rather he write about what he's feeling than try to write something more substantive if he's not into it. Sorry might come off as petty but he's pouring his emotions out there.
Here's my main issue with his lyrics always revolving around Slash, other members, Steph, and fans.....
What else does he have to say? Look at how the world had changed since 1991. He didn't have anything to say artistically about the changing times?
Any relationships after Steph? He never had children...does he have anything to say about this? In the early 90s he talked about being abused in his youth.
None of these things were ever conveyed in his work...and it's a shame.
It seemed like the lyrics of Civil War were coming from someone who has a lot to say.... instead it is an anomaly.
he has a couple songs like that but not many
Cather in the rye is one example. but you are right Axl is pretty much one or two noted for the CD era stuff. Its all about him being fucked over either by his ex or slash and the old band or mangers.
Well, he was very clear that Sorry isn't about Slash. Let's take a look at the tracks on CD:
Chinese Democracy – about, well Chinese Democracy. Inspired by Kundun, references the Falun Gong, etc.
Shackler's Revenge - about the Virginia Tech shooting and the fact that the killer apparently listened to a GN'R track (Mr Brownstone?).
Better - About a relationship/ex
Street of Dreams - About a relationship/ex
If the World - About a relationship
TWAT - Definitely about a relationship/ex.
Catcher in the Rye - about the murder of John Lennon, IIRC.
Scraped - general statement of defiance against the haters. Probably about Axl's struggle to keep the GN'R name alive.
Riad N' The Bedouins - About Erin Everly's brother-in-law and self-proclaimed international arms dealer.
Sorry - Emphatically not about Slash, the "you know where to put your/just shut up and sing" is pretty clearly referencing a former manager or similar. Basically Axl's "Death On Two Legs."
I.R.S. - About a relationship/ex
Madagascar - General statement of defiance ("I won't be told anymore/That I've been brought down in this storm")
This I Love - Relationship/ex
Prostitute - mix of relationship/ex and general statement of defiance ("Why would they tell me to please those/That laugh in my face")
So, that's 6-7 tracks about relationships/love, 3 "fuck the haters" ones, and a couple of random ones about oddments like international arms dealers and Chinese government repression. Given how heavily weighted music is towards songs about relationships, that's not a bad spread. I think the "Axl just sings about his exes" narrative is a bit overstated tbh, especially when those tracks also incorporate a lot of other interesting emotional textures.
