then remove songs you don't want to play because of beef with a co-writer (eg Pitman/Izzy etc)
They don't seem to have had any problem playing Madagascar, or indeed any Izzy song.

I don't really have anything against the Axl vocal on this one. It was a bit of a surprise when it first leaked ("okay, that's the direction he's going with it?") but it works for me.
I'll always have a soft spot for the demo of one, I remember wanting to hear a studio version of it ever since RIR III. Getting that demo onto my iPod and walking down the street with it blasting was… a moment.

Could never get excited about it - BH's solo is tasty but that's about it. Axl sounds decent but it just isn't that strong a song for me. Another example of the kitchen sink been thrown at it production-wise. Is this the only song where Richard Fortus is audible? Is is that Paul Huge I hear in there?
Yeah, it's kinda ridiculous that it's impossible to tell whether it's Fortus, Huge, Bumblefoot or Finck laying down chords on many songs. In retrospect Axl should've committed to one lead player (be that Robin or Bucket) and a rhythm player (Fortus) and stripped out everything else.
Ironically if they can get their finger out of their collective arse, that's what we'd get with a new album.

I do wish the orchestra had been a wee bit higher in the mix during the solo – it's kinda buried under Robin when it should be more complementary.

I think the album version nailed it. Great track. I will say I do find myself listening to the synth/keyboard/random odds and sods track from RB quite a lot, 'cos there's so much going on in the song it gets a bit lost. I especially love the "wee-oooo" synths in the second verse (you know the ones, they kick in about 1:40). Kinda wish they'd been higher in the mix.

misterID wrote:It's been a while since I've heard it, but I don't ever remember hearing Slash butcher a new era song. Maybe he struggled on that TWAT outro? I don't know. But like how they rearranged Better's and Hard Schools intro, I can see them doing the same to the others. I'd really love to hear Slash's take on Atlas Shrugged and State of Grace.
What is this strange universe I’ve entered where I actually agree with everything misterID says...?
But yeah, Slash hasn’t really butchered any CD tracks, though I expected him to do more with the This I Love solo, than the shreddy noodling stuff he does on it.
The version he played at Orlando 2016 is biblical:
A lot of the other versions of TIL, he does improv-noodle a bit, but the Orlando solo feels like it has structure and flows between moods.
I don't really think his style lends itself to the TWAT outro, I'm kinda baffled they didn't give that one to Fortus tbh.

Also, love the lyrics. "Feelin' like I've done way more than wrong/Feelin' like I'm living inside of this song [...] Could it be the way that I've carried on/Like a broken record for so long".
Who says Axl doesn't have a sense of humour?

I always liked the choppy waka-waka guitar riff in the second verse of the '99 demo (which is sort of there in the final version, but buried under layers of effects). Wish they'd kept it.

Though to be fair, I can see how Axl defaults to his falsetto in the chorus. Scott's chorus is perfectly pitched in the awkward range between the high end of Axl's low-register voice and the low end of his falsetto, and he can't really scream the chorus.
