#451 Re: Guns N' Roses » Ron Thal talks "Absurd" » 270 weeks ago
From memory it sounded pretty much like the finished version except with bumble's amp tone and fretless between verses instead of the slash licks. Basically the same version of the song.
Had it been released in decent quality I think it would have held up ok - although of course people prefer the classic line up.
The exact same Rolling Stone writers calling it a "classic punk track" with Slash on it would be calling it "Axl's delusional foray into industrial" with Bumble playing on it.

Would rather hear the 03 versions, but knowing this band if there ever is a boxset it will be the Ashba Versions
Christ I hope not.

Imagine him trying to sing those these days. Neither have featured since 2012.
The more we get from the NITL lineup, the more irritated it makes me that we didn't get it in 2006 when Axl was on top form. Just imagining Rock Am Ring Axl paired up with Velvet Revolver-era Slash and Duff hurts my heart.

This is one of the interesting things to me. For all the talk about musical differences...CD and now Absurd showed that basically all of Axl's alternative ideas can still be converted into UYI era rockers/ballads.
It really shows most of the problem wasn't the musical differences but just the miscommunications and lack of mutual respect. Sad really cos they could have sorted this out in 1995 or something.
Yup, it's kinda funny. Turns out that techno-industrial track was really just a punk rock track with the guitars dialled down and the synth dialled up.

Ya know, given that Axl can draw on extra reserves of oomph in his voice doing the "Brit punk" vocals for Absurd, I'm kinda surprised they haven't popped Down On The Farm into the setlist.

they are rehearsing hard school, so hopefully its not that far behind.
Hopefully. I guess with Absurd doing the rounds they won't want to drop Hardschool too soon and steal its thunder, though.

Lyrics are far too repetitive. I was hoping more would have been added and I just kind of rolled my eyes when the verse came up for a third time.
I did wince when the same verse cropped up for the third time. Given that the chorus is just him shouting "Absurd" you kind of need a bit more variance in the lyrics...

So basically: if it's Mick and Keith, they can get away with calling themselves the Stones. Some hardcore fans will gripe, most will shrug and pony up for the ticket.

As with most bands, you can get away with keeping the name as long as there are two key members there. If Liam and Noel are there, it's Oasis. If Axl and Slash are there, it's GN'R. If Flea and Kiedis are there, it's RHCP. If Mick and Keef are there, it's the Stones.
If they're missing one of the Iconic Duo, the fans won't buy it. Beady Eye literally was Oasis minus Noel, but there was no way they'd get away with keeping the name. Look how Axl struggled for years (arguably in vain) to get people to accept his band as GN'R. Look how Brian May and Roger Taylor get pushback from fans for touring as Queen with Adam Lambert (I fucking guarantee if Freddie were alive and, say, John Deacon were dead, no one would have a problem with the other three touring as Queen).

It's kicking more and more ass the more I listen - granted, I have had a couple of beers to honour the occasion...
Duff is not getting enough dues thus far - he is bossing that bottom end not to mention anchoring the punk rock vibes it benefits from. The whole band sound great Axl included, 20 year old vocals or not. The production and general sound is lightyears better than CD
Yeah, I mentioned it elsewhere, but I love that little bit at 1:56 where Duff throws in a little bass lick. Reminds me of his work with Walking Papers.
Production and mixing is great, except that weird bit where "screaming fucking banshee" is out of sync with the backing track. But it has to be intentional, surely? It couldn't get through Axl, Slash, Duff, the management and the record company without someone pointing it out, if it was a mistake.
