Falun Gong for Christmas?

While touring was apparently grounded while waiting on Robin to fulfill his NIN commitments, GNR apparently looked into working their way around it.

"[Axl and I have] actually discussed very deeply about doing some more gigs, maybe around Christmas time. Anytime he’s hinted at anything like that it’s come true, so that could happen. I know he’s extremely busy working on the release of his record and getting it out to the people." (Baz, Subba-Cultha, 07/08)

NIN would, in fact, go on a break after their last North American show on 12/13/08. As for GNR, a return to China might've been in the cards.

"GN'R promoters in China dropped plans for two shows this year, says Ms. Lebeis." (Beta, Wall Street Journal, 11/22/08)

W.A.R. on TV

"A major music-oriented television channel has pitched an idea for a reality series to Axl Rose, according to sources close to the project. The show, which would appear on a cable channel that asked not to be identified, would follow the troubled rocker as his continues his decade-long effort to release the Guns N' Roses project "Chinese Democracy."

[...] The new (still untitled) reality show would follow Rose and his band as they prepare for release of the album. It would include behind-the-scenes rehearsal and studio footage, as well as interviews with a number of the participants. 'There is a lot of footage to choose from,' said a network source. 'Some of it is incredibly personal and revealing about Axl's life.'

According to the network source, the deal for the show is 'close, but not signed.' Part of the holdup seems to be the timing, as the particpants want to integrate the show into a timeline with the leadup to the album's release, along with the announcment of a limited number of concert dates." (All Your TV, 04/08/08)

Del James was quick to jump on the matter, delivering an unsurprising response.

"Despite rumors floating around the Internet, Guns N' Roses will not be appearing on any reality TV program to promote their forthcoming album, Chinese Democracy, or for any other reason." (Del James, GunsNRoses.com, 04/14/08)

The network might've just as well consulted the unofficial GNR spokesperson.

"I would bet my life you won’t be seeing the Axl Rose reality TV show. [...] We were gallivanting across Europe [in 2006]. We are sitting [at a restaurant] and I go, 'Dude, I just shot this reality show for VH1 and they paid me this amount of money, man. [...] They’d pay you like a million bucks for 10 days of some shit.'

He’s looking at me with this look on his face and he's all quiet and he goes, 'Sebastian, you don’t understand. [...] I will pay VH1 $2 million to leave me the fuck alone!'" (Baz, Rolling Stone, 06/23/08)

Make You Hurt

24qmtkp.jpg

On 04/05/08, NIN.com published a recent picture of Robin Finck at the studio, with the caption, 'Welcome Back!'. He'd arrived just in time to begin recording parts for Reznor's new studio album, The Slip, which was released in the following month as a free download.

"I am thrilled to announce that I will be playing with NIN." (RobinFinck.com, 04/11/08)

“[The initial] conversation [with Trent Reznor] happened [in around March 2008],” Finck says. ... Actually it started in an email and then a telephone conversation and eventually we had an organic conversation about what was going to happen - he shared with me the plans he had with NIN and asked if I would like to be a part of it, and I agreed to join the band again.

“[Trent] had just finished Ghosts, I believe, and ... he had a batch of songs that became The Slip and invited me to play in the studio for a few days on those songs. That was a real charge for me and I ended up playing with him not just on the album but also on this tour.” (Time Off Australia, 02/09)

Robin leaving Guns may have happened as early as late 2007, given what DJ Ashba has mentioned regarding his audition.

“What happened is that I got a call, basically saying - I got a call at Sixx: A.M., and we had a number one hit at the time, and it said: 'Listen, Guns has been auditioning guitar players for about a year and a half on the down low. They can’t seem to find the right guy.'" (DJ Ashba, Westword Backbeat, 12/09/11)

Ashba's audition was held by or on March 2009, which suggests the auditions would've been ongoing when Robin and Trent reconnected.

As was the case in 1999, Robin left the band after completing work on several albums.

"Robin's work on [CD 2] is done, so there's not lots for him to do here, except the elusive promo, and he'd rather be on stage." (Axl, MyGNR, 12/12/08)

"Robin does a really great Stevie Ray Vaughan -type solo on one track." (Axl, Spinner, 02/27/09)

Del James was the first from the GNR camp to comment on the matter.

"Only Robin knows what the hell he's doing." (Del James, 04/06/08)

"Robin's plans caught everyone in Guns, as well as our fans, a bit off-guard. Really, Del James' private e-mail that someone took upon themselves to post publicly is the best way for us to address things at this time: 'Only Robin knows what Robin's doing.' [...] When we begin to put tour plans together, we'll see where things are." (GunsNRoses.com, 04/20/08)

"Last I was aware, [Robin] had some interest in touring, though I can't say what that means until then. In our opinion, he's made things a bit awkward publicly, but that's just his way." (Axl, Spinner, 02/27/09)

Incidentally, Josh Freese, who played with Robin in GNR in '98-99 and toured with him in '00 (while Robin was in NIN and Freese in their opening act, A Perfect Circle), played the drums on the album and also joined NIN for the 2008 tour.

In the fall, Reznor confirmed that Freese was to leave the live band following the December shows. This fueled speculation that Robin would do the same, making himself available for GNR in the process.

"Josh Freese fans be sure to check out a show on the upcoming North American leg of the tour, as sadly they will be the last ones he's playing with us. He informed me he's leaving the tour at the end of this year. Yes, we are still dear friends. No, I'm not sure what we are going to do." (Trent Reznor, NIN.com, 10/08/08)

"Despite numerous reports and submissions, [...] Robin Finck is not leaving Nine Inch Nails at the end of the tour to rejoin G n' R. This should clear up any rumours that the Finckster will indeed be "pulling a Freese" any time soon." (The NIN Hotline, 11/12/08)

As for Finck himself...

“Look, I’m not really [doing a NIN interview] to talk about the Guns n’ Roses guys,” he counters, with the sort of diplomacy one might use when discussing a notoriously litigious former employer who likes to start feuds at the drop of a hat. “I certainly wish them the best, though.” (Time Out Sydney, 02/09)

In March 2012, over four years after leaving the band, Robin was reunited with GNR onstage.

The Mad Doctor

Back in January 2001, the shows were opened with an animated short film, in which Axl enjoyed a Diet Coke. Seven years later, he was about to trade off.

"Tired of a world in which Americans idolize wannabe singers and musicals about high schoolers pass as rock ’n roll music, Dr Pepper is encouraging (ok, begging) Axl Rose to finally release his 17-year-in-the-making belabored masterpiece, Chinese Democracy, in 2008. In an unprecedented show of solidarity with Axl, everyone in America, except estranged GNR guitarists Slash and Buckethead, will receive a free can of Dr Pepper if the album ships some time — anytime! — in 2008." (Dr. Pepper, press release, 03/26/08)

"We are surprised and very happy to have the support of Dr Pepper with our album "Chinese Democracy," as for us, this came totally out of the blue. If there is any involvement with this promotion by our record company or others, we are unaware of such at this time. And as some of Buckethead's performances are on our album, I'll share my Dr Pepper with him." (Axl, GunsNRoses.com, 03/26/08)

In his response, Axl made a few promises in a typically vague fashion:

* Buckethead would be featured on the album
* The album would be released in 2008, as Axl'd share his release-day soda with Bucket

Deal With Me

With the album finished and initial talks begun with BestBuy in late 2007, the decade-old dirty laundry with the record company turned into another stop-gap.

"The latest rumor swirling around Guns N' Roses is that the long over-due 'Chinese Democracy' is complete and with the label but a new battle has emerged that is causing further delay." (Antimusic, 01/10/08)

"I hear the new G&R CD is actually done, but the delay in release is not the bands issues but the label. There is so much money tied up in this record that in todays business it will be virtually impossible to be profitable, meaning the label might want to sell it off but can not find a buyer since nobody buys CDs anymore. Problem might not be Axl this time around and might keep this CD in limbo for more years to come. Hopefully it gets resolved." (Eddie Trunk, 01/14/08)

"According to The Pulse of Radio, recent reports have indicated that Guns N' Roses' long-awaited new album, 'Chinese Democracy', is finished and the group's frontman W. Axl Rose is negotiating for more money with his record label before he will release the masters." (Blabbermouth, 02/07/08)

In early spring, a heavy-weight tiebreaker was brought in to orchestrate the final details surrounding the release.

"Axl Rose announced Thursday that he and Guns N’ Roses are now represented by the management team of Irving Azoff and Andy Gould." (GunsNRoses.com, 03/27/08)

Azoff, the legendary Eagles manager, had been linked to GNR back in 2006, but a deal came never came to pass at the time.

"Word is it was Azoff who initiated the push to resolve all the issues at once, in a negotiation led on the Universal side by the corporation’s president, Zach Horowitz." (Idolator, 11/20/08)

"Guns N’ Roses linked with managers Irving Azoff and Andy Gould, and [Best Buy] then continued structuring the deal with the new management team." (LA Times, 11/20/08)

"After months of back and forth, a deal was worked out to resolve all of Axl’s disputes, with Chinese Democracy — and a nice 'thanks for the retail exclusive' check from Best Buy — underwriting the peace agreements." (Idolator, 11/20/08)

Even the publishing right controversy was resolved amicably, through a financial settlement.

"Slash and Duff are receiving a little payback for their troubles from Axl’s Sanctuary deals, and Axl himself received a new advance, though the currently undisclosed figure is said to be somewhat less than it would have been if he didn’t have to give something up to settle the outstanding debts." (Idolator, 11/20/08)

#38 Re: Guns N' Roses » Fortus: GNR tour should begin in late March '09 » 859 weeks ago

The Fortus comment was a direct reaction to Rolling Stone picking up on the story and blowing it up into a singular news story:

Guns n’ Roses Guitarist: “Chinese Democracy” Tour To Start In March, Last “At Least Two Years”

12/29/08, 8:55 am EST

Buried deep in an article about Guns n’ Roses guitarist Richard Fortus and his one-night reunion with Pale Divine is this bit of potentially huge news: A Gn’R tour should start in late March and is expected to last “at least two years,” according to Fortus. The band had hinted at a possible tour on their official Website in April, saying the fifth Chinese Democracy tour since 2001 was in negotiations — “When we begin to put tour plans together, we’ll see where things are,” the band said at the time — and a source close to the band told Rolling Stone an ‘09 tour was in the works. With album sales slumping and Axl Rose still reluctant to conduct any interview outside of message board forums, a tour is just what the album needs for a promotional boost. If the March start date is correct, it puts Guns in a position to headline several huge festivals in 2009 on both sides of the Atlantic.

Fortus has played guitar in some capacity for Gn’R since 2002, when Axl Rose’s friend Paul Tobias left the group’s revolving-door guitarist job. Currently, Fortus is the lead guitarist on Rihanna’s Good Girl Gone Bad tour. A St. Louis native, Fortus says he and Axl joked about returning to the city where, in 1991, Rose caused a riot after he stormed offstage because a photographer in the crowd ticked him off. “There has been talk of us doing a Love tour, a tour of all the cities where there have been riots, and doing free shows,” Fortus said.

We’ll remain optimistic about a Guns tour but again, this is the gloriously unpredictable Axl Rose we’re dealing with.

For the record, all things Fortus has said about touring as of late:

"The next tour will be... I don’t know if I should talk about it. I don’t think we’re going to be doing dates this year, either. I think we’re supposed to be starting back up in January." (Richard Fortus, Ultimate Guitar, 11/26/08)

"I get home on the 20th of December, and then get the family and go to St. Louis [for a Pale Divine show]. And then the day after we play, I'm flying to Dubai for New Year's; they're still trying to figure out where the [Rihanna] New Year's show is going to be. GNR's not doing anything until next year, in January." (Richard Fortus, The Pageant, 12/09/08)

"'There has been talk of [GNR] doing a Love tour, a tour of all the cities where there have been riots, and doing free shows,' Fortus said in a recent telephone interview. [...] Regardless, he said, late March should bring the GN'R tour, which likely will last at least two years." (Richard Fortus, The Telegraph, 12/26/08)

"OK, it seems that I am being misquoted once again. I never said that Gn'R would be playing St. Louis, nor did I say that we will be doing free shows or that we are starting a 2 year tour in March! Selective hearing. Never said it." (Richard Fortus, HTGTH, 12/30/08)

January was canceled.

Now March is in doubt. What fun.

#40 Re: Guns N' Roses » LARS ULRICH Holding Up Release of GNR 'Better' Video? » 860 weeks ago

Viral marketing.

The promotion is in big trouble, and GNR now attempts to create some petty controversy over their new video. People still remember Montreal '92, so it's not a stretch to imagine Axl getting into a feud with Hetfield / Ulrich. In reality, Axl's getting into some imaginary trouble for the entertainment value, as well as capitalizing on the fact that Ulrich got caught on tape two years back.

This whole thing stinks up to high heaven. Ulrich's completely unnecessary when considering the video and his inclusion and the 'problems' caused by it are nothing but a publicity stunt. It's like Wrestlemania, really. I only wonder whether Axl's people told Lars in advance about the fact that Fernando would 'leak' this little bit out (notice how quick Blabbermouth got a hold of it), or will he be caught up cold the next time he checks the Metallica board?

Takes about a week for the official website to say anything, I'd wager. GNR sinks to a new low in their desperate attempts to market the album with no real promotional budget - or a clue.
