#271 Re: Guns N' Roses » Why doesn’t GNR monetize their past tours more? » 143 weeks ago

It's a weird one, isn't it? During the CD years there was an obvious reason: they didn't want to reinforce the "Slash is GN'R" narrative and undermine the then-current lineup by releasing material showcasing the old lineup.

That's surely not an issue nowadays. I had a vague theory that there were legal hang-ups and disputes over royalties with the AFD/UYI lineups, but the live material on the AFD/UYI box sets gives the lie to that.

So… why? They have a mountain of archive material and it would only serve to drum up interest in the touring machine.

JFC yes. I still can't believe that I missed the opportunity to see GN'R in the UK in 2002, and that Buckethead still hasn't come back.

Ah yes, the event where Kurt Cobain spat on the wrong piano.

I own thousands of movies on disk and tape that I collected over the years...but it's obvious the future is streaming...so i thought fighting it is pointless..it gets hard to even get a quality cd player now.....so i swapped to streaming...still keep a 4k player for favourite franchises...but I am resigned to streaming for day to day stuff.

I totally disagree on the movie part.  There's something relaxing to me in just grabbing your favorite movie that's on a disc and just playing it instead of depending on a reliable stream.  Plus I like going through my collection and just watching something that I haven't seen in a while for whatever reason.  I mean sometimes it can be daunting going through tubi and finding something you may like.  Also there's something in knowing that it's there and you can watch  it whenever you want.  There's stuff I bought like 10 years ago, that I finally rewatched and rediscovered.  I just don't think it's the same if I watch it streaming.  This part is difficult for me to explain, since it's feeling, and an impression and emotions.

As for SOG,  I'm just going to go with there will be new music released in 2022 with the Slash comments and the admittedly sketchy Spotify search results.

There's actually a whole thing with non-fungible tokens for ownership of digital copies of movies and music, now. Kevin Smith released his last film as an NFT, and there's a lot of talk in the film industry about how it could shake up the streaming business model (briefly: you can allocate a portion of a secondary sale of an NFT to the original creator, which creates a whole new revenue stream that didn't exist before).

Off topic, but on the liner notes of the AFD 30th anniversary box set, the last line of writing credits says “November Rain writing by Slash, Duff McKagen, W.Axl Rose, and Izzy Stradlin”. I thought that was interesting. Any insight why this is now a group effort and no longer just W.Axl Rose?

I have given an explanation here:

Damn, they did Fortus dirty on Better, given that he wrote the "Now I know you better" riff.

The fact that we're all aware the new material being released is reheated Chinese leftovers colours our response to it, but it's still new studio material, it's new to the vast majority of the public, and by the looks of it there's an EP about to drop.

.

This is simply not true since 99% of GNR fans never heard the hard school leak and thought Hard Skool sucked.  It also got like zero radio play bc again it sucked.  No one cared.

Also if it wasn't for the leaks then GNR would have released no music and we would not have heard anything.
The only reason why CD was released is bc the leaks forced the album out.

Only reason why we got hard skool as a single is bc it leaked, same goes for absurd.

My point is simply that hardcore fans drive enthusiasm for new material, and if those hardcore fans have either heard or are aware that the "new" songs are based on two-decade-old leaks, it saps that enthusiasm. Hypothetically, imagine Perhaps hadn't dropped in the leaks, and in 2022, GN'R dropped a song called Perhaps with Slash and Duff. The hardcore fans would have no idea that it wasn't written and recorded in the last year, and would sing its praises to the hilt.

But as it is, if and when they do release Perhaps, the hardcore fans will immediately go "meh, heard it before," "The Robin solo was better," "I preferred the drums on the original" or whatever. The enthusiasm from the niche community of fans that activates (in marketing speak) the wider community is missing. It's widely known in marketing circles that small, hyper-engaged communities are the ones that drive enthusiasm in the wider market; the fact that 99% of GNR fans never heard the Hard School leak is utterly irrelevant. The 1% that matters did.

Anyway, Beta and co have done well to an extent in the sense that Axl was on a life path that would probably have seen him either in jail or dead, most likely dead Kurt style, at one time. Now we have him mostly happy and still out there and alive into his old age.

On the other hand the side effect as we all know is that on a business level the band's affairs have not been well managed for several decades and many things have not been as good as they might be in a perfect world.

I think Team Brazil's been a net positive, certainly for Axl's mental health. And I think the accusations often levelled at them that they're not good managers are… well, wide of the mark, frankly.

A succession of managers tried to fuck Axl over and force him to abandon the Chinese Democracy project in favour of a money-spinning reunion. TB respected Axl's wishes, facilitated the reunion happening at a time of his choosing, and were in charge of the ship when the band went on to perform one of the biggest tours in history.

Is there shitty merch? Yes. But no shittier than the stuff on, to give a random example, the Metallica store (Freeze 'Em All stein! The Four Horsemen Beach Towel!): https://www.metallica.com/store/accessories/ Shitty merch isn't really aimed at hardcore fans like us, and I'll be honest, a collab like GN'R X MARKET is actually trying to do something a bit different.

The biggest sticking point, as always, seems to be "why no new album?" Frankly I think that's coloured by the leaks – if Hard Skool had dropped and we'd never heard the leak, fans would've been over the fucking moon – an all-new hard rock song with Slash and Duff on it. A lot of the release issues over the last year or two have been the fault of global supply chain problems, too; it's hard to schedule a simultaneous release when there's no vinyl available.

Would I like it more if Axl decamped to a studio for a fortnight with Slash, Duff, Fortus and the gang, and jammed out some new tracks? Yes. But we're actually pretty well-served, really.

Also November Rain has had the synth orchestra replaced with a real orchestra, so it isn't a typo - it's a new 2022 version.

Those are the highlights content-wise. Also a nice hardcover book with photos + some other random replica merch.

Wow, okay. The orchestra's gonna be slightly jarring to hear. Also odd given that Axl poured loads of effort into the synth orchestra, and I always assumed it was a conscious artistic choice, given that he could've just… hired an orchestra. GN'R was the biggest band in the world at that point, it was clearly within their ability to do so.

#280 Re: Guns N' Roses » SOG single coming? » 144 weeks ago

It would be so bizarre and in keeping with GN'R's schizophrenic release "strategy" to plop out an EP of all-new material at the exact same time they drop a remastered box set of one of their classic albums.
