Yeah it's especially sad if you've been watching Celebrity Apprentice recently. In the last few episodes he got a call from his daughter who was showing signs of juvenile diabetes and she was going into the hospital for tests. She asked Bret, "Will I have to take shots every day like you daddy?" He was all broken up over that.
I never realized how big a deal, and how difficult living with diabetes can be. Again, hope for a full recovery for Bret. He seems like a genuine and overall nice guy.
There was a interview I read with Brett probably 15 yrs ago. He talked about getting pulled over by the cops (or getting into some sort of trouble.) Anyway, they found his needles and they assumed they were just his rigs for drugs. He tried to tell them he had diabetes, but they yahoo deputy just said "Oh sure, that's what they are for Mr. Rock Star." So the guy was thrown in jail and deprived of his insulin! I can't remember how it ended, either he got bailed out, or somebody verified his medical condition. But that's some scary shit, being locked up and having your lifeline essentially thrown away.
I talked to my physician last year about my experience and she said it more than likely was a stroke. Strokes can be very compartmentalized, where just one limb becomes paralyzed etc. Sometimes they stay that way, sometimes not. Some people end up like Adler with a speech impediment. It all depends. I am thankful it wasn't worse, and am concerned that my odds are higher of having another one day. Although it's nothing I can change at this point.
Anyway....Sadly Brett sounds like he has an uphill battle here. He already has serious health problems (albeit manageable) and now this. One thing about life, more times than not we have to live it on life's terms and not our own. Stuff like this happens, and it turns everything upside down. The older you get more you come to terms with that.

The mortality rate for a second hemorrhage is quite high. I hope he makes it through this and nothing happens after that.
Brain hemorrhaging is a serious issue, I hope he pulls through. However, I couldn't help but laugh at what Gary Busey said.
Gary Busey...now that's some funny shit. I had a stroke when I was 21 near the end of a three day coke bender. Being completely unaware of the signs at that age (or anything else for that matter) I didn't find it particularly alarming that my right leg became totally inoperable/unable to move. I lugged my lifeless right leg behind me for blocks-my foot sideways dragging on the ground. Totally oblivious what was happening to me, my left hip began to hurt after a while so I took a break, and sat on the curb smoking a cigarette. I finally made it home where I collapsed into bed, mystified by my paralyzed leg, but more concerned with sleep. When I woke up the next day it was fine and I didn't think anything of it.
It didn't occur to me until nearly 18 yrs later that I not only had a stroke, but smoked through it.

It's something I think is very likely. I've always felt that we exist at a level that we are only capable of understanding right now. That everything we see around us, more than likely isn't as it appears, but only is what we're able to comprehend at this phase of our development. "Life is but a dream" is very fitting indeed.

From my negative point of view...
The only tour footage Ive seen are the Rose Bar videos, they were pretty cool and the band seemed tight, but I have no interest in the current lineup bar Axl and Tommy. The revolving door lineup just doesn't appeal to me and I wont waste time bothering with updates from guys who could be gone tomorrow.
I have to admit the revolving door soured my fanaticism. Standing behind a "new" band back in 01 was different. I felt (at the time anyway) that this was a new band, and after seeing them in Vegas was blown away. I was willing to accept that as "GNR" back then. Now...not so much. In some ways it's kinda a bummer. These days, especially looking back, my view on the entire saga (band break up, new band reforms etc) has changed. I won't say what I've been thinking these days, as it will just stir up more tired old arguments. Really too, they aren't worth arguing anyway; it is what it is at this point.

Good job. Just remember to stay in the moment. When I first got sober, especially the first few weeks, I had to sometimes set 15 minute goals. A day was simply too long to fathom. Don't feel weak if you have to break the day itself into segments initially. Also remember that any bad feeling you have will eventually end. Pain will eventually go away. Sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly, but it will go away. Anxiety may come out of nowhere and make you think all kinds of weird stuff. That is when you have to really take control of that moment with your brain and focus on your breathing, a walk, or call somebody. It will get much easier with time.
Obvious things are not hanging out in a bar to "Just drink juice" or drinking NA beers. Or hanging out with old pals who promise "They won't let you drink" etc. They will all say this, and they probably mean well. But if you fall off the wagon they'll just drink along side you anyway. Sit in a barber shop long enough and you're going to get a hair cut.
One of the hardest things is for your friends to understand where you are coming from. Don't expect them to get it. Some will, some won't. I had people I knew for years that I had to cut out of my life once I got clean. The chance of me getting drunk with them was much higher than them staying sober with me. It can be lonely, but that is what meetings are for. You HAVE TO surround yourself with sobriety. Statistically speaking the cards are stacked against you, and that is why you need every advantage you can here.

Hungry
Angry
Lonely
Tired
Are all triggers to go back out. When you feel like using, ask yourself if any of those apply and then address them. To stay sober you must find a sponsor (especially in the start) and go to meetings. Surround yourself with other people who understand you, that means meetings. Real live meetings, not online (although those can be a great supplement.) You need phone numbers of people you can call 24/7 if you are feeling weak.
Proper diet is so important. Omega 3's are essential to brain function/emotional health/anxiety etc. Low sugar, fuck the caffeine too while your at it. The last thing you need is any spikes in blood sugar followed by a big drop. Talk about setting yourself up to drink. Eat as many natural (ie non processed foods) as you can. Your body desperately needs nutrition right now. Drink lots of water.
In short you need to work on all aspects of your existence in order to stay sober. The best method to do this is one day at a time. Find a sponsor, go to meetings, light exercise, proper diet, get phone numbers, don't beat yourself up for anything. Listen more and talk less (take the cotton out of your ears and put it in your mouth.) Embrace HUMILITY, put ego on the shelf and most importantly be honest with yourself. If you don't have the capacity to be honest with yourself, you will never stay sober.
PM me if you need help getting there.
Sober since 9-10-97
