#2011 Re: Guns N' Roses » Rumor: Axl and Slash at same hotel in NYC? » 896 weeks ago

Yeah... on the three guitarists thing, it struck me that a Fortus/Slash/Kushner line-up might work. Neither of them is in any danger of overshadowing Slash, but Fortus could do all the shredding and Kushner could make the weird experimental noises. And it'd maintain the VR/GN'R balance in the band.

I dunno, I guess I just think Bumblefoot doesn't quite fit as Fortus in a classic-style GN'R. I love the guy - Normal's one of my favourite records - but he doesn't quite have the right vibe.

See, I'd argue that Fortus is capable of playing the Buckethead/Bumblefoot shred parts.

I mentioned over on Chinesedemocracy.com the interesting point that you only really need Slash and Axl up there to bill it as a "reunion". Most rock bands have two iconic members - usually the singer and lead guitarist (but not always; for the Chilis it's Flea and Kiedis). The other members can be replaced, but the Stones wouldn't be the Stones without Mick and Keef, Queen isn't Queen without Freddie and Brian, Oasis can still get away with calling themselves Oasis as long as Liam and Noel are there... and GN'R is, in the eyes of the general public, Axl and Slash. Which is ironic, since Izzy was arguably more important to the band than Slash.

I don't think Slash would be willing to simply replace Finck; his ego wouldn't let him step back while Bumblefoot played the November Rain outro, for instance. He wouldn't want to be a mere "employee" of Axl, so he'd want Duff to come along at least.

Axl, for his part, wouldn't want to deal with a united front of the former members of VR, so would want some of his people along to maintain the balance of power within the band. Thinking about it logically...

Duff and Slash join Axl. Izzy declines to get involved in a tour, but agrees to take on songwriting duties on the album, and guests on tour (Slash said, IIRC, that Scott was the major stumbling block to using Izzy's material for Velvet Revolver). Fortus stays on board - he knows the songs, none of his solos would encroach on Slash's, and he has fantastic stage presence. Possibly, Fortus's old mucker Frank stays on board (or Matt comes with Duff and Slash). Dizzy (and Pit(t)man?) stick around on keyboards.

I'd definitely go. x10 if Fortus was up there with Slash. I've said elsewhere why that's not too unlikely (Izzy doesn't like touring, Axl would want some of his people there so that Slash/Matt/Duff couldn't present a united front against him, Fortus already knows the songs, unlike Dave).

If Slash were to come back... they'd have to re-record Chinese Democracy. Again. FFS.

The cards have been on the table since the second Weiland walked out the door.

We're probably much closer to one happening then people realize.

my fantasy of seeing Slash and Fortus sharing a stage.

That will never happen. We'll never see a CD era member onstage with a reunited old lineup. There's no reason for it. The moment Axl screams and Slash starts playing Jungle, to paraphrase Amon Goeth in Schindler's List, "the past 12 years become nothing more than a rumor".

except for maybe the drummer

in the case of a reunion, i see axl keeping frank or brain over bringing matt back. but maybe it's wishful thinking.

I would expect Axl to keep at least a couple of "his people" on board; he doesn't want to be on his own dealing with a united front of Slash/Duff/Matt. Izzy doesn't like touring and the band would need a rhythm guitarist; with that in mind, I'd expect Axl to keep Fortus on board (he knows all the GN'R rhythm parts - which is more than Kushner does - he's one of Axl's crowd, and he even looks like Izzy, for heaven's sake). There isn't a hope in hell of Adler coming back, and I dunno if Axl would want to deal with Matt, so there might even be an opening for Frank there (since he's pretty tight with Fortus).

It wouldn't be ideal - I'd far rather see Axl touring with the current band (or, better yet, Buckethead), but if there was a reunion of sorts, I'd be happy enough with a Fortus/Frank/Axl/Slash/Duff/Dizzy line-up (with Izzy turning up for occasional guest appearances and songwriting duties on the album).

Okay, if Tommy's out then the cards are really on the table for a reunion. Slash wouldn't join up without Duff - he'd want someone from his own camp on-side. But if Tommy's in GN'R, there's no place for Duff. If Tommy quits, then the reunion suddenly becomes far more likely. And so does my fantasy of seeing Slash and Fortus sharing a stage. smile

Just a thought - the original piece about the reality TV show said that GN'R would promote the release with a limited number of live engagements. If they're only doing a couple of live dates, Robin would easily be able to cover both them and NIN.

in my worst dreams, I could not imagine a worse lineup for the new Gnr. However, I will gladly take any leaks. Thank you in advance!:haha:

I dunno, I would literally gnaw off my own arm to see Fortus and Slash sharing the stage, and the rest of that hypothetical lineup is based on "most likely" predictions.

I'm assuming Slash would want Duff along for the ride, but Axl likely wouldn't want Matt back, and would want someone from his camp present - hence Frank (because Fortus knows him well, and I'm assuming Brain wouldn't want to be part of this project). I've dropped Kushner in there as a wild-card; Axl would probably want a third guitarist, but Slash's ego wouldn't allow for someone like Bucket or Bumble stealing his thunder. Also, I like Kushner, and his experimental guitar tricks would probably appeal to Axl. Plus it maintains the balance between the Axl/Slash camps. It's quite a hard-rock line-up, too; now imagine them with Izzy taking a songwriting/occasional touring guest spot - I think they'd put on a pretty damn good show.

I've clearly put way too much thought into this! smile

...I mean, with Robin departing, this thing is fast heading for a trainwreck of epic proportions. If Stinson goes, that's it - there'll be space in the band for Slash and Duff, and the calls for a reunion will become ever louder. I want to hear what this band has created, before a reunion puts the kibosh on the Chinese Democracy project forever.

That said, a Slash/Fortus/Kushner(?)/Duff/Frank lineup sounds mighty appealing.
