that's exactly what i've been thinking ever since axl said "all the real artwork will come out soon" and such...
i still think all the real promotion will start when the album is rereleased after the BB copies are gone...
You know... That actually makes a whole lot of sense. By this, I don't mean its a convenient straw for the Axlites to grasp, but everything seems to point towards the fact that the album was rushed out in a number of ways. Best Buy reportedly bought over a million copies of the album for their exclusive deal, covering the pre-existing studio bill Axl had generated up until February 2004 and the cut of funding.
The bill was said to be around $13M, and BB paid around a million more. If this truly was a case of 'selling off a debt', Axl and/or Geffen wouldn't actually have that much of a point in investing to promotion, as the BB deal itself is money in the bank. Just looking at the financial side, why would either party go out of their way to benefit the sales of BestBuy?
The alternative artwork's a rather marginal lure when considering a traditionally distributed re-release. If, and only if Geffen and Ax really want to push a new version of CD out, it'd have to be a double album with proper promotion. Music videos, interviews, the works. Who'd in their right minds bother to buy the existing album three-six months from now if they haven't done so already?
I'm not getting my hopes up, but I wouldn't be too surprised if Ax really was hinting about things to come... A double album with alternative covers.

'Okay Jarmo' is a personal remark?
No.
But namedropping him in this context is not necessary either.
You can be more creative than that.

And don't ever call me Jarmo again.
Right on.
It's as offensive as calling me a fucking retard.
Wrong.
Both of you: No need to bring Jarmo into this conversation, let alone throw a personal remark his way. This isn't the kind of place the condones such talk about other boards and their respective admins.

Headlining a Perry Farrel festival with Dave Navarro as the new lead guitarist?
Sorry, just had to say it. Lolla's pencilled for August, so it'd be good business to do away all those European festivals in June/July before launching a US run there.

Everything Carpenter did up to They Live is passable at least. Everything since is quite turgid, with the possible exception of In the Mouth of Madness, which, even while struggling to be on par with his lesser 80's works, is still head and shoulders above the rest. Which is quite, when you think about it.
Never understood the gloating Masters of Horror: Cigarette Burns gets, as I found nothing beyond the non-sensical plotting and cringe-worthy performances. Even the shooting was uninspired; the elevator scene was the one single instance where I was reminded of the good old Dean Cundey way of framing, the Carpenter standard in the old days. The ending? Please. Never show the McGuffin, particularly if it's a 'haunted' film. Udo Kier was somewhat fun, but when the final line is uttered ('thank you... for this'), I was already shaking my head in disbelief. Formalistically, Cigarette Burns itself might pass for a haunted film. It certainly worked for me in that regard.

Winter Solstice, the arrival of the 13th Baktun. Anyone with even cursory knowledge of the Mayan civilization would know their calendar system was highly advanced, even moreso when considering the astronomical technology at their disposal.
I might be at the Yucatan that Christmas, so I'll see you there.

2008 added.
I'm counting on the fact that Ax won't pull an 11th hour surprise on me.

Dexter Calling
By December 17th, Chinese Democracy had sold 1,156,000 copies worldwide, with BestBuy sporting a stateside result of 365,000. As they'd bought 1,6 million copies on behalf of their exclusive, the actual amount of sold copies was, by then, a little short of 2,3 million. Rather fittingly, the album therefore has two separate sales results.
On November 18th, Tom Zutaut, the A&R Man who originally signed Guns to Geffen Records and worked on the bands all releases up to the Sympathy for the Devil single in late 1994, and almost got Chinese Democracy made during his year with Axl in 2001, was escorted out of the albums listening party at The Roxy in Hollywood, California. As Zutaut stood on the sidewalk, French horns kicked in and Madagascar played out. On some level, he must've appreciated the irony of it all.
Between December 12th-14th, Axl made a series of appearances at the three major Guns N' Roses message boards, delivering answers to various matters in a rather open and verbose fashion. The reputed Howard Hughes of Rock had released his album and finally made the distance towards those who'd stayed up and waiting.
In mid-December, Classic Rock published an abridged version of Chinese Whispers as a 20-page supplemental booklet for their January 2009 issue. The chronicle which had started as a collection of quotes, mostly from printed sources, had succesfully made the transition to the original medium, becoming a Chinese Democracy article by its own right.
In January, a new journey begins.
Thank you for your patience.

A Better Video
An apparent snippet of a rough-cut live video for the albums second single, Better.
As with the Black Sheep / Harley-Davidson promo, Better was again considered a prime canditate for a visual representation. Axl even went on to mention the video would feature footage from the recent live performances.
"I think [the red bike from the Melbourne show on 06/16/07 is] in the Better vid. Not sure if we cut it." (Axl, MyGNR, 12/12/08)
A release date was also thrown into the air - will he ever learn?
"[Regarding the video's release,] soon is the word as in a week or so." (Axl, MyGNR, 12/12/08)
While the video never came, some dubious accusations did surface - this time, they were even more ridiculous than the case of the mistaken Harley promo.
"Tell Lars [Ulrich] to OK the vid and it's done. [...] We are pending his release form to be signed." (Fernando Lebeis, MyGNR, 12/29/08)
"Lars isn't holding anything up with our video. Our message board comments were meant casually, in fun and amongst friends. [...] We hope to have our video out shortly." (Fernando Lebeis, Blabbermouth, 12/30/08)
Ulrich later commented the Better issue in a backstage fan interview.
"I have heard about this, yes. There's a couple of clips of me in the video and they asked if I'd sign off on it. When it got to me, I signed off on the one clip and that was something that happened. I don't know where it came from. Someone else asked me about it the other day... I'd love to be in a Guns N' Roses video.
[...] It's my favorite song on the record. I think it's a great song and I can't wait for the video to come out. There's a shot of me and Axl embracing backstage, and I signed off on that. Hopefully, it'll make it into the final cut." (Lars Ulrich, The Hog, 01/12/09)

All Quiet in the Western Front
Following the album release, tour rumors picked up again. Perhaps the most burning question was the would-be lineup.
"The latest changes made [on GNR MySpace] are to the current band members information, where guitarist Robin Finck and drummer Bryan 'Brain' Mantia are no longer listed." (GNR Daily, 11/13/08)
Everything looked good for a quick start in 2009, after Robin'd return from the road with NIN.
"The next tour will be... I don’t know if I should talk about it. I don’t think we’re going to be doing dates this year, either. I think we’re supposed to be starting back up in January." (Richard Fortus, Ultimate Guitar, 11/26/08)
"I get home on the 20th of December, and then get the family and go to St. Louis [for a Pale Divine show]. And then the day after we play, I'm flying to Dubai for New Year's; they're still trying to figure out where the [Rihanna] New Year's show is going to be. GNR's not doing anything until next year, in January." (Richard Fortus, The Pageant, 12/09/08)
In December, though, it appeared the tour had been postponed. A possible reason might've been Robin's commitment to an Oceanic tour with NIN in February.
"'There has been talk of us doing a Love tour, a tour of all the cities where there have been riots, and doing free shows,' Fortus said in a recent telephone interview. [...] Regardless, he said, late March should bring the GN'R tour, which likely will last at least two years." (Richard Fortus, The Telegraph, 12/26/08)
As these offhand comments were picked up by Rolling Stone and given an added emphasis, Fortus was no doubt asked to correct himself.
"OK, it seems that I am being misquoted once again. I never said that Gn'R would be playing St. Louis, nor did I say that we will be doing free shows or that we are starting a 2 year tour in March! Selective hearing. Never said it." (Richard Fortus, HTGTH, 12/30/08)
