I look at this a different way....

What would have been the purest and most fan orientated way to do this tour?

Answer: Bring Stephen, Izzy and Matt along. Celebrate the messy history of the band and play great gigs together to say thanks and celebrate the fact that millions of dollars are still being made by all.
It would have been true to history, a fan pleaser, good for karma etc.

Instead, Axl wanted to justify his CD band, just like he wanted to do at the RNRHOF.

Axl won this war; he still owns this band and he has the A list alumni back on his own terms.
In fact, he's done such a great job it would appear that Duff and Slash are enforcing his terms on guys like Stephen.

Well done Axl!!

I know this is probably BS but I couldn't help noticing in that interview with Axl & Duff that that the left side of Axl's mouth seems frozen and a little heavy looking. I think he slurs just a tiny bit too.
Maybe he had some dental work on the day of the interview or bad botox but does anybody else see/hear this?
Could explain why he says so little on stage now.

I think a few of you are spot on about Axl paying for the tour out of his 50%,  there could be other side deals going on merc etc. also.
If you think about it, its the best deal for them all...Axl stays in control, GNR is still his but his headache to manage (which would explain Matt's absence and Stephen's limited show), Slash & Duff get huge pay for raising the profile of GNR again - the merc deals they are on must be sweet too.
Everybody saves face.

For me its the love Axl has in his eyes for his old mates that blows my mind..whatever was bothering him about Slash is dead and gone. Axl always said the apology from Slash would have to be public, yet nothing has been said by either man.

I'm guessing  that both men found out about the real hurt they caused each other on a personal level in their war, had a period of reflection which brought remorse and enlightenment and a mutual agreement to whole heartedly bury the whole thing between them and not sell that to the world to interfere with.

Either way, both men are obviously really happy and so is everybody that rubs up against them. My last prayer is for a sprawling double / triple album with whatever is in each man's musical heart spilled out for me to spend years listening to.  If I don't get that, one last look at them together on stage (which I last saw in Mannheim in 1991) will do.
Amen

Because how many GNR songs were ballads written about women? Tons, so maybe Slash was just bitter at everything Axl would do and it pushed him away. Who knows.

Or maybe Axl wanted to write an album of 6 ten minute love songs filled with self pity and recrimination and Slash wasn't prepared to work on such matters.

Its fair to say that at that stage, both men had lost sight of what their fans wanted, some wanted the love songs, some wanted the rockers, some wanted a bit of both but not a huge fucking slew of one or the other. That's what managers and record producers are for, to balance out the extreme tastes of the chief song writers and keep them working together via compromise. With the management vacuum in the band, both men were free to push for the worst extremes of their own visions to be inflicted on the others.

I can even see Axl's younger face starting to re-emerge from the bloat...this has been very good for Axl's health, this is obvious.

Yup, he looks reinvigorated and confident. Taking on Coma means business. Delivering with it is pretty exciting.

Also agree on his physique, he fell into heavy drinking after the disappointing CD release and I reckon he gave up to the urge to 'live a little' after being sequestered in the studio and his mansion for over a decade. He'd been entitled to the Rock Star deal for a long time, only to use it as a leverage to make his own art, exercising ferociously in the process. Despodence followed, along with decadence.

Slash has been so generous to Axl here, he's a huge act on his own, his back catalogue with GNR could fill the night  easily, yet he still graciously agreed to work on these songs.

I think Slash mostly cared about the freedom to create his own gtr solos after Axl explained to him why he wanted those three songs. It's generous, but, across the table, it's also Axl. His songs, which he offered to Slash to elevate, like Estranged. And there's still good tunes for this band on that album, like The Blues, Catcher - and TWAT.

Great post Apex, thanks for taking the time.

I agree with James, the DJ/Ron era of GNR was the ultimate cash grab and boy did it show...jaded to tatters set lists, low energy singing, poor band dynamic, burgeoning alcoholism and bad humored interviews with Tommy...

This is really different, frankly Axl is singing with so much fire and passion I am scared the guys throat is going to explode out of his neck. He's grinning all the time, deep cuts that even the most hopeful of us thought we'd never see again were straight back in.

I mean did Axl suggest Coma to Slash? He must have as the band always knew its a bastard to sing, so that decision had to rest with Axl. That means that Axl must have sat down and thought about what songs Slash loved to do in GNR and he gifted Coma to him...

Slash is remaking CD bit by bit, that means he put thought, consideration and effort into respecting Axl's work done without him.
This kind of shit is not cash grab, its putting on a fucking amazing show for the fans AND making a ton of cash for doing it.
Big difference.

Last thing - no teleprompters? Am I right in thinking that? If I am right, that is a HUGE deal for Axl, he's obviously not drifting during songs anymore. This is real.

Amazing TWAT solo. I'll expound later, but I think it says something that he completely gutted the TIL solo but followed the TWAT blueprint while putting his own spin on it.

Good observation. Respect the chicken but throw away the mashed potatoes.

Not a dig at Finck but its obvious he did not like that solo.

Axl is nailing this song vocally. I love how he sings 'Lonely tear drops are calling you....but I don't wanna know it now....'

We need this in HQ very badly.

Disagree entirely on that. There Was A Time/Chinese Democracy sound excellent at the minute. The less layers actually making them feel more alive (live) now to me.

I agree. I'm surprised zombux isn't too thrilled with it as he's a huge fan of the early CD lineups and this reunion is taking the songs back to their roots. The current version of CD and the HOB version blow away the noise pollution album/ post CD performances of the song out of the water.

AtariLegend wrote:

One upside/downside to take out of this. There Was A Time looks like it's the alternative for Coma. That means there's a chance when Axl is out of the chair they'll be playing it more often, but it might mean Coma will become rarer again.

For the moment. This strategy was used by Soundgarden as well....a rotation of deep cuts. One night fans get Head Down, 4th of July, etc. and the next night in those slots you get Mind Riot, Birth Ritual, etc.

They aren't phoning it in. This strategy also points out the laziness of the CD years. Those rehash set lists could have been performed in their sleep. I'll never forget how they wanted us to think those set lists were "spontaneous".

bigbri wrote:

And so what if he's shredding?

14 Yeah...no shit. Its ok for Ron to wank all over the songs needlessly but its somehow a disappointment for Slash to shred within the context of the song.

I agree with DCK on how Bucket gave great renditions of certain old songs but Ron jumped the shark on some of the material and I don't see a problem with Slash adding his own ingredients to songs. If any guitarist to ever perform in this band has the right to take liberties with material, it is Slash...

And I would almost guarantee we'll have new music my Christmas.

One song? A possibility. Full album? Set your watch for next year.

otto wrote:

Do you guys think it's ironic to hear Slash ripping on a Paul Huge's song? smile

And by the way, do you think Slash KNOWS it is a Paul song?

Of course he knows. He's also heard the rest of the material and likely knows who was involved with each track. When he starts retooling songs he's going to want to know who is playing specific tracks within each layer that require removal. 22

Ron who?
Paul who?
Bucket what?

This is all too big now, those guys are all very small dots in the GNR rear view mirror. Like when Aerosmith replaced Joe Perry..the sheer scale of this return will mush the memories of the other guys to vapors in no time at all.

#18 Re: Guns N' Roses » Axl/DC - Soon is the word. » 478 weeks ago

If Axl sings at the level he's been at these last few shows then any AC/DC fan who rejects him is a fucking idiot.
Brian has been treated harshly, nothing to do with Axl though so give the man a break and let him do his shit.
If you're not a fan of this move, don't fucking go to the gigs, simple as.

Personally, I wish Axl was working on some tunes with Duff & Slash but hey, I love AC/DC and I'm more of a Bon Scott fan than Brian in terms of vocal tone so Axl fits his legacy really well, they sound like very old AC/DC again...should be a great show.

#19 Re: Guns N' Roses » How Duff McKagan brokered multi-million dollar deal (Tabloid Article) » 478 weeks ago

You know what..? Up until these gigs started I would have given a nut to hear all about how these guys got back together again. Now?
Frankly, the music is so fucking good and so FRESH and NEW again that I'm just to damn pleased with all of them to really give a shit.
My only hope is that all of the shit is really dealt with and the hurt is over.
They are playing so well that I think it just might be.

Axl Fucking Rose...what can I say? I have bitched and whinged that Bruce Springsteen is 66 and was slaying you...now I see a man who obviously has the minerals to stay in the game at this level for another decade and take his rightful place beside him. Axl's voice?? WTF?? AMAZING!! Rasp, power, confidence, soul and taking on Coma...? Incredibly brave and not just brave either..fucking KILLING it too.
I can even see Axl's younger face starting to re-emerge from the bloat...this has been very good for Axl's health, this is obvious. I mean Axl is starting on time, confident and happy...am I fucking seeing things???

Slash...he has re-imagined parts of CD and I am getting excited about those songs..."This I Love" - I wrote it off as Day Time TV muzak.. but now?? I think its coming to life thanks to Slash and Duff, its getting bigger and more melancholy.
Slash has been so generous to Axl here, he's a huge act on his own, his back catalogue with GNR could fill the night  easily, yet he still graciously agreed to work on these songs.

These fuckers better do an album.
