Though it sounds rather like there was a finished Slash-era version of TIL - wonder if Slash did a solo for it? Now that'd be something to hear (for all that I love the Finck solo).

Be interesting to speculate on what Axl would've done with Fall To Pieces. It'd certainly be completely different lyrically, it's a very personal Scott song.

The other guitarist possibility, of course, is that Dave Navarro might've joined up and stuck around if Slash had been in the band. I could see a Slash/Navarro line-up working; Navarro doesn't seem to threaten Slash's ego in the same way that Wylde and Huge did (he seems happy to take a back seat and play rhythm in Camp Freddy, while Slash hogs the limelight, for instance). Plus he has the widdly shred skills that Slash lacks, and the experimental vibe that'd suit Axl - actually, didn't GN'R try to recruit him as a replacement for Izzy?

Okay let's make this hypothetical-could have been album up. Track by track.

Heres what I got.

1. Dime Store Rock Snakepit
2. Doin' Fine Snakepit
3. I.R.S Huge/Axl Collaboration
4. TWAT Huge/Axl Collaboration
5. The Rose Petalled Garden BLS-from Wylde/Slash sessions
6. Box (Down By The Ocean) Possibly one of the tracks Duff and Izzy wrote
7. Fall To Pieces Velvet Revolver- was written during the 94-96 era
8. Monkey Chow Snakepit
9. Believe In Me Duff Solo- featuring Slash
10. Catcher In The Rye Huge/Axl Collaboration
11. Beggars and Hangers On Snakepit
12. This I Love Axl

It's not a GREAT album but it's good and if they had went with it and reworked it, could have been pretty killer. Again this is all hypothetical stuff, like elevenday said I'm cherry picking.

'Course, we're also overlooking things like: the versions of TWAT and IRS that would've appeared on this album would be extrapolated from the pre-Buckethead versions; so no gigantic solo at the end of TWAT (unless Slash had the same brainwave). Indeed, it wouldn't even have the killer Finck solo or his licks over Axl screaming "I would do anything for you." Which kinda make that song.

It's a pretty solid album, but the other thing we've got to remember is that in 1996, it would've been "just another GN'R album". The mythology of Chinese Democracy hadn't built up, GN'R-style rock had yet to be rehabilitated in the wake of the grunge explosion... I don't think it would've made that much of an impact. Certainly not as much as Chinese Democracy would've done had it been released in 2002.

...Though having said that, it's easy to look at something that didn't happen and claim that it would've been better than what we got. For instance, if you look at Queen's The Miracle, Innuendo and Made In Heaven, and the Brian May solo album, there's a killer Queen album in there somewhere. But, of course, you're cherry-picking the best tracks.

I never understood Slash's beef with Huge - he's a lot better on SFTD than Gilby was on TSI. I know the "doubled up" guitar parts offended Slash's ego, but TBH the track works better with them.

If Slash hadn't had a stick up his ass over Huge's involvement, I could see a 1996 album with that line-up working. The Snakepit songs, Rose-Petalled Garden (maybe a Zack guest spot?), FTP, a couple of Izzy contributions (don't forget the Duff solo stuff that started out as GN'R tracks), This I Love, maybe even (given that Huge co-wrote them) I.R.S., Catcher and a Slash-heavy version of TWAT.

I'd buy that album.

#1867 Re: Guns N' Roses » Super-Speculative Reunion Thread. » 826 weeks ago

The trouble is, Axl is fighting against an ingrained perception. The general public looks at a band, sees two "key members" and considers them to be the heart of the band. Most often, it's the frontman and the lead guitarist; Page and Plant, Brian and Freddie... Axl and Slash (though sometimes, as with the Chilis, it's different members - Kiedis and Flea, in their case).

You can change up the band as much as you like as long as you keep those two guys - witness Oasis, where Liam and Noel are the only members remaining from the original line-up. No-one misses the bassist or the drummer. But witness how Queen have struggled to convince anyone that they're Queen, without Freddie Mercury present.

If 2002 had worked out and Chinese Democracy had dropped then, with Axl on his 2006 form, he would've had a chance; MTV seemed to respond to Buckethead's iconic image, and Axl might've been able to make him supplant Slash as, if not "the GN'R guitarist", then at least one half of a similarly iconic pairing.

I guarantee, though, that Axl could take Fortus, Ferrer, Dizzy and Tommy out on tour, and if Slash was there, people would call it a GN'R reunion - even if Duff and Izzy weren't there. Likewise, Axl could take Duff, Izzy and Matt out on tour, and if the lead guitarist was Dave Navarro or Bumblefoot or whoever, the wider public wouldn't call it GN'R.

People are shallow.

Let 'em stand at opposite ends of the stage glowering at each other - I couldn't give a fuck, as long as they're playing SCOM.

That's actually a really good point.

Actually, just put Slash in a box like Robin on the Howard Stern show.

Arf. big_smile

Having said that, I do love the new band, and I'd rather Axl was happy singing with them than miserably forced into singing with the old guys. But I want to see him fucking singing.

Without hearing, y'know, actual music, it's hard to say. It baffles me when I see people going on about how The General is CLEARLY more awesome than Atlas Shrugged - without at least a sample of the music, you're just throwing titles around...
