#1741 Re: Dust N' Bones & Cyborg Slunks » Duff Leaves Jane's Addicition » 771 weeks ago

I know everyone jumps on me when I suggest him, but I'm convinced that Chester Bennington would be the best choice for the new VR singer. He occupies a space halfway between Axl and Scott; he's got a similar stage presence to Scott, the same "skinny-cool vibe", as Classic Rock magazine put it, but he's also able to sing those higher-register GN'R songs. And there's no doubt that he's a "name" like Scott.

The only real difficulty would be working out a schedule that allowed him to work with both VR and Linkin Park. That, and his friendship with Scott, which might preclude him taking over Scott's position in VR.

I'm really not sold on Myles. His voice is very reedy in that high register - it reminds me of 2002 Axl more than anything. And he consistently fluffs the lyrics to the old GN'R/VR tracks. His stage presence isn't up there with Scott or Axl, and his lyrics on the Slash solo album were... well, a bit banal.

I find the production on AFD's a bit dated; the drums in particular. I can't explain exactly what it is about those drums, but there's something, some reverb or the way they've been mic'ed up that makes them sound very, very 80s. It doesn't help that the album's never been properly remastered to give it a bit more punch. I'd be fascinated to hear the 1999 AFD redux - it's the thing I'm most curious about from the Chinese Democracy sessions. I'd even, I think, take a leak of that over a leak of Checkmate.

Of all the albums, the one that sounds least dated is the acoustic portion of Lies - probably because it's difficult for a stripped-down acoustic track to date.

UYI hasn't dated nearly as badly as AFD, IMO. It feels a bit redolent of the early 90s in places, but that's probably just my mind free-associating when I hear it, and conjuring up memories of Nintendo and Terminator 2 and Slash in plaid shirts.

The Spaghetti Incident... well, let's just say that Izzy's absence really makes that album suffer. I'd love to hear the original mixes, with Izzy in place of Gilby.

The jury's still out on Chinese Democracy, really. I think it sounds very of the moment, though - which is interesting, given that it was recorded over the course of a decade.

Stop the 'CD is progressive' nonsense. It is not. Just different. Very different, cause other people had to write the music for Axl and nobody told him not to use stupid '80s synth effects. Dream Theater is (was) progressive. AFD GN'R is debatable, but CD was not progressive at all. Not a second of it. It was dated before it got released, not to mention the uninspired songwriting. OMG 18

I'm just talking in terms of musical development; the band changed over those years, but we never got to hear the intervening stages which would've made those changes seem more organic. Instead we just jumped straight from A to Z without hearing B, C, D etc.

Just a quick note related to this topic.  Listening to The Eddie Trunk show from last night on Sirius and a caller called in and asked him which he liked better, "Slash" or "Chinese Democracy".  He said that for him, "Slash" was a better record because it was more straight ahead rock and that CD had a lot going on in it.  He did say that the record has grown on him and there a lot of thing on it that he now really likes and that maybe down the line it'll be viewed as a masterpiece.  He went on to say that AFD was his favorite GNR album and that he wasn't even a huge fan of the UYI's because even they were getting too bloated for him.

Just made me think when people say CD doesn't sound like a Guns N' Roses record to them.  To me it sounds EXACTLY what a Guns N' Roses record was going to sound like.  It was quite a progression from AFD to UYI, so the continued progression was only natural.

This.

I feel the same way. I placed CD just slightly ahead of AFD for that reason. It truly seems to me to be the natural progression of things.

As Ron has pointed out, it's like you're skipping from, say, Meet the Beatles to The White Album without hearing the intervening years of musical development; all that stuff is locked down in Axl's vaults. It's a crying shame that we'll never get to hear that material; I'd love to hear the sessions that gave us the so-called 1999 versions of TWAT and IRS...

Managed to track down the MLK speech on YouTube - really interesting to hear those quotes in their original context:

Ouch that's a bit rough! I think he messed up a line in Civil War a few times, but it's not really much worse than that is it? I also disagree about the stage presence, i'll grant he doesn't have axl's intensity (you know that vibe you get from Axl that he's right on the edge always) but I thought from up front he looks cool and is pretty watchable. I liked his songs on slash's album, I'd be interested to see what he did with a heavier riff though.

He hasn't managed to get the lyrics to Civil War right *once*. He also has a tendency to fuck up the old VR tracks - where Scott would deliberately tweak a line so it reads differently in the second chorus than in the first, Myles just sings the original version twice. If that makes any sense.

I dunno, it just feels lazy to me. There's a reason those lyrics were written like that, and it feels like Myles is just singing them from memory, like he's doing karaoke or something.

And yeah, he doesn't have the stage presence of Axl or Scott. It's like he's seen rockstars doing this shit on TV and he knows you're meant to flail around with the mic stand or whatever, but it always seems a bit forced.

I mean, I'm sure he's a nice guy and all, Slash picked him and he's a better singer than I'll ever be, so who am I to criticise? It's just... well, I can see why Duff nixed the idea of him fronting VR.

That said, I'd imagine the two singers in the running are Myles and Franky Perez. Corey Taylor would be a good pick, though I still maintain that the best person for the gig would be Chester Bennington, not that he'll do it...

#1747 Re: GN'R Downloads » What Axl & Slash would sound like in 2010 » 772 weeks ago

I do love the way he incorporated Axl's spoken-word vocals from the GTA video game - really makes it sound like an Illusions-era track, like KOHD or Breakdown. smile

Still think Better goes, um, better with Beautiful Dangerous, though.

In a right and just world, Chester Bennington would get the gig; he's got a similar stage presence to Scott, but he's got Axl's pipes.

I'd love to get my hands on that alternative cover/booklet...

Ashba really does overdo it with the doodles on his guitars, doesn't he? It's like a 14-year-old scribbling skulls on his schoolbooks...
