#1731 Re: The Garden » 2008 NFL season » 857 weeks ago

I'm rooting for the Cardinals too since I can't stand the Steelers.

However, this thread does make an interesting point regarding parity.  Would you rather have a league where essentially regular season accomplishments mean nothing (NFL)?  Or would you prefer a sport where the regular season holds some meaning (NBA)?

As much as I like some aspects of parity--quicker rebuild time for a franchise, genuine hope for say 75% of teams to have some kind of playoff aspirations--part of me wonders whether or not some of those Super Bowls would have been better had the higher seeded team won.  I can't even remember when the last time there was a one seed vs one seed in the Super Bowl; I think Super Bowl 26 WAS vs BUF might have been the last one.  I think the general goal of every team should be to make the playoffs since its pretty much a crapshoot now and the records are wiped clean and everyone is 0-0.

I have the same problem too.  The tests come back clean.  Unfortunately, the only option the doctor told me is to take MORE tests if it persists.  So I don't worry about it right now.

#1733 Re: Guns N' Roses » "Better" starting to gain MASSIVE steam.. » 857 weeks ago

At some point during that 03-06 silent era, it jumped the shark into irrelevancy. It still got mentions in various media outlets, but it just wasn't the same. Not sure what caused the jump and no one will ever know completely as it was likely a combination of the various absurdities.

I suspect the price tag for the record 10+ million had something to do with it.  In addition, since 2000 (or 2001) the record was always "rumored" to be released.  You can only "cry wolf" for so long until people stop paying attention altogether and treat it as a joke.  The reality is that when people (not the diehard fanbase but just ordinary Joe) hear that a record has taken up millions to make and still hasn't been released they kind of shake their head and say that's a prime example of overindulgence.

Once he canceled that tour in late 06 to 'finish the record', it was burnt toast.

See previous response for answer to this point.

Had Axl wanted to drag this project out, a lot of the info we got last year from the likes of Brain, that great CR article detailing the making of CD, etc. should have been released during that silent era. It could have possibly kept real interest alive by getting that info out to the general public in almost real time updates.

I'd take the contrarian viewpoint the mystery and aura of this record was what kept interest for so long.  If the leaks had happened in 2001 or 2002 would the anticipation have been as much?

The album in 2001 would still be lacking the hits that its lacking today. However, the songs would have went over better simply because they fit in more with that time frame.

I'll agree as it would have led to less overproduction and much better flowing songs that don't sound cut and pasted to death.  I think that a Better version 2001 and a quality produced version of the original Catcher in the Rye with Brian May could have been the hits that the band was seeking though.

I wish there was some way for women and people without a Best Buy in their town to obtain the album.

This is where I think the band failed miserably.  They should have offered to sell CD online and offered free shipping like AC/DC did with Black Ice.  This could have given them another avenue of customers.  Instead we get the usual garbage on the website.  Another missed opportunity again.

Regarding GNRBABY, no one here is picking on you or being overly negative.  It's just that when you see the actual FACTS about the album it is hard to be positive.  It has sold less than expected when compared to their counterparts Metallica and AC/DC--those bands compete with GNR for the same fanbase (hard rock/ metal music buyers).  No one knows who is in the actual band or when a tour--the only guaranteed moneymaker for a band currently--will take place.  I read the other day that Dizzy Reed the longest tenured band member besides Axl didn't know which of his parts ended up on the album.  How ridiculous is that!  The 2002 and 2006 tours were underwhelming in terms of gate receipts.  People will only go if Slash, Duff and Izzy are there.  In addition, Axl has pissed off a lot of people with his lack of promotion for his own grand opus. Taking together all these facts it is hard to believe why the record company will release another CD era album from Axl Rose.  I think this situation is similar to the one with Gary Cherone and Van Halen.  The first album III bombed and the subsequently recorded album was shelved by the record label.  Luckily, CD hasn't bombed out to that level I guess.

but he's the Peter Gammons of music.

lol

Gammons gets stuff right like twice a year or something, so his rate is higher than Axl's.  He's more like the Peter Vecsey of music--the basketball rumors that guy churns out never comes to fruition.

WOMEN BUY SHIT and WOMEN DON'T GO TO BEST BUY. Period

Is this another excuse for why the album hasn't sold?  Honestly, would you at least consider the lack of catchy tunes/hits to be a main reason for its failure?  Seriously, if people have an interest in a product they will buy it its as simple as that.  You can blame Best Buy all you want but at the end of the day if people aren't interested it won't sell.  Take for example Death Magnetic, the thing leaked two weeks earlier worldwide--original leaker originated in France--and still sold like 500,000 copies in 3 days.

I won't disagree with you that Best Buy depressed sales a little.  However, that is a minor reason why this thing didn't sell.  Axl no showing on promo work, the lack of catchy tunes, and no Izzy, Duff, and Slash were the main culprits of its downfall.

#1737 Re: The Garden » Circuit City to close all stores » 857 weeks ago

Circuit City had been in trouble for a while though so this is no surprise.  I pity the people going to Circuit City this weekend to scope out a sale since CC will only take off 10% of the product.  This will strengthen Best Buy and Wal Mart.  Personally speaking, I don't really care for Best Buy's prices on electronics--they always seem a bit high.  I've always found decent dvd deals there though at least compared to CC.

#1738 Re: Guns N' Roses » Metallica make offer to tour with Guns N' Roses » 858 weeks ago

sorry but you're wrong, in dublin they started their set in full daylight. just an example off the top of my head

I think the only reason that he showed up early was because there was a midnight curfew and that power would be shut off after that.

As far as Metallica ever touring with GNR again that will never happen as James and Kirk don't really care for Axl.  James recently compared Axl to Hitler.  Honestly, I think they were just being nice out of respect to Lars' friendship with Axl.

#1739 Re: The Garden » Old WWF question... » 858 weeks ago

Here's another question I would hope someone would answer:

What is the deal with the WWE and Randy Savage?  Vince has basically given everyone a second chance from Hogan to Nash to RVD.  He brought in guys who were successful in WCW (except Sting) and gave them a run in WWE.  He rehired Warrior in 1996 (for a short time).  What exactly is the issue between Savage and Mchmahon?  Apparently, people don't bring up Savage's name when Vince is around because they know it will piss him off.  The only thing that I've read that makes some sense is that Vince thought Savage would return to WWE in 1996 at Survivor Series, but he chose instead to remain in WCW.

I have several questions:

Didn't Beta say that the album was turned in December 2007?

Neemo or anyone, does anyone know the exact terms of their current recording deal?  How many albums do they still owe to the label?

If the record label was involved in the tracklisting etc. why didn't they pick more rockers/stuff that sounded like old gnr to make it more accesible to the public?

Nothing is small & cheap with a band like this. Bands like GNR cost millions to run, even with a solid fan base; 2,000,000 albums per outing will not pay to keep this machine running. Personally I don't think Axl can internalise the idea of being a small time / medium success rock band anyway, nothing about him, his music or his behaviour indicates that.

Yeah, but you're talking about a guy who spent something like 7 years in seclusion.  He clearly will tour or do things on his OWN damn terms and no one else's.  There is direct evidence against your first sentence:  the website its content and the way it is run.  If that doesn't say apathy and shitty I don't know what else will.  Besides you are looking at this from a normal perspective, GNR is clearly not that.

As much as I would like a reunion, it does not seem likely at this point.  Axl has to find some sort of peace and closure from the past events for that to even to be considered a possibility.  Maybe they should all go to group therapy or something.
