Happy birthday Axl!  You have brought a lot of people happiness and joy throughout the world with your music and melodies.  I hope that you find happiness and a peace of mind that you seem to be searching for.

Um back to the topic at hand, I think Axl could have gained legitimacy for the 2001 version of the band if let's say he gave an interview--say in 2000--explaining Buckethead's arrival and how he is different from Slash.  For example, he could have gave this answer:

Unfortunately Slash left the band but we think that Buckethead will add a different dimension to the music we are creating.  He will not replace Slash as Slash's legacy will remain in his accomplishments with the old band.  Buckethead has a diverse musical style that is all his own and distinct.  He is a central component of what we are trying to do.  For our fans we provide these samples of Buckethead for them to judge and enjoy for themselves. (link to mp3s of Buckethead demos with GNR or solo work)

Something like this would have helped the casual fans realize that this was not just the Axl Rose solo project but an actual functioning band.  It would have taken some of the weight and pressure off Axl's shoulders as well.  It would have also prepped the fans for the different sound and look of the band in 2002 when they went on the VMA's and the subsequent tour.

Now, flash forward to the current times, GNR will not be doing a major tour in the US.  It is just not economically feasible for tour promoters in this current economical climate.  Tour promoters want a sure thing, which means a proven product.  Roth fronted VH, AC/DC, Metallica, and U2 all fall into this category.  Only a reunited GNR would attract any major dollars in the current climate.  Let's call this the familiarity factor.  I could foresee a few new GNR shows in Europe though as they seem to be more open to the new Gunz as opposed to the US.

Commercials were horrific. Nothing memorable.

That Doritos one in the first half was especially bad.

Wasn't a bad game. In the 4th quarter it just went back and forth. Game could have went on all night and they would have just kept scoring. AZ defense made crucial mistakes on that final Pit drive, which is unfortunate since momentum had shifted to AZ in those last couple minutes. That safety was huge, and the TD afterwards should have been the nail in the coffin. They left too much time on the clock.

Yep.  One of the key plays was PIT converting  a 3rd and 10 from inside their 20yd line and the obvious play with Francisco falling down and allowing Holmes to gain a bunch of RAC yards down to the five yard line.

I think there were a bit too many penalties for this be known as a classic though. The most comparable game to this one would be the Pats-Panthers super bowl from about five years ago.  This game has nothing on SB 25 (sorry James!) or the Packers-Broncos super bowl from 11 yrs ago.  I don't know whether or not this was better than last year's though.  The defense played last year was far better/

T

he Undertaker is my favorite wrestler but I flat out don't pay any attention to WWE anymore and haven't for a number of years.

I don't pay attention as closely as I used to either.  I think its the people they currently push as the main event stars--Cena and Orton--that turns me off.  They just aren't as talented in the ring or on the mic as the guys of yesteryear.  Personally, I can't remember the last time I watched a RAW show in its entirety from start to finish.  I think the fact that interviews and angles replacing wrestling might have something to do with that.  I still watch PPVS though and they still deliver for the most part.  The PPV this month featuring the Elimination Chamber looks good.

Right around the time that Vince bought WCW and you had a huge influx of WCW guys into WWE is when I started losing interest. I enjoyed WCW as its own thing, but for whatever reason the combination of the two just didn't work for me.

I think they botched that "Invasion" storyline big time.  WCW's demise hurt wrestling fans in general since it took out the primary competitor for WWE and hurt the WWE product in the long run.  The stuff that has been wriitten since 2001 has been nowhere near as edgy or interesting since the prime years of the Monday Night Wars from about 1997-late 1999.  Why bother working as hard when you know you're the only game in town?

Stone Cold was a badass and I'm not sure why he ended up leaving the business. That guy was probably the most compelling wrestler ever outside of Hogan and Undertaker.

The injuries ended his in-ring career for one thing.  His neck got injured in a 1997 match with Owen Hart when Owen botched a tombstone piledriver.  He also had multiple knee injuries which didn't help matters.  He also had issues with McMahon which caused him to leave the company at least twice.  In 2002, he didn't want to job to Brock Lesnar and left the company.  He came back later in 2003 as an on screen character.  At Cyber Sunday 2005 he was scheduled to lose to Jonathan Coachman in a match but he left a week or two prior to the event and was replaced by Batista.  Eventually he returned as both sides hammered out their issues.  He has made a ton of money over the years and has no financial interest to return to the ring and I'm not sure he could physically do it if he wanted to anyway.  He spends most of his time making movies for the WWE branch--I think he negotiated that into his last contract following the dispute.  Hope this answers your questions.

I've been going though some of my "older" WWE dvds in the last week (partly thanks to this thread!), and I got to thinking about how cool "Primetime" was. I loved that show. It was a 2 hour show on Monday nights on USA, before Raw debuted.

I remember one of the first times I started watching wrestling was in 1992.  They showed Ric Flair vs Bret Hart for the WWF title in Canada somewhere.  After they showed the match--with Bret winning the title--they went back to the studio and showed Mr. Perfect and Bobby Heenan making excuses for Flair.  I think they said he was sick and shouldn't have been out there.

NY Giants82, do you remember who hosted that show?  I think it was Gorilla Monsoon and Heenan.  But I think Lord Alfred might have had a role in the show as well.

Just which of the remaining songs would be suitable for a summer blockbuster movie anyway?  Shackler's Revenge or Scraped seems likely for an action film.  This I Love could be used in a romance I guess.
