It occurs to me that BBF's recent studio version of the Pink Panther theme is - rather oddly - the first studio recording featuring the current GN'R line-up, featuring as it does Frank, Fortus, Tommy, DJ and Ron himself…

These setlists look fucking amazing. Civil War and Motivation? Hope they bring this show to the UK soon...

Yeah, I don't see Deacy signing up for anything. But even if they got one writing credit out of him, it'd do a lot to endorse the band. That's what they really need, the hardcore fans are dead set against Lambert 'cause he's a "pop karaoke act" (never mind the fact that he has years of experience doing musicals, and pretty much the only way to get into the industry now is through talent shows).

And getting endorsement from the music industry figures who are friends and fans of the band would help, too. Grohl, Iommi, Gaga, Axl, Elton - get them all writing for the album, shore up any perceived weaknesses in Lambert's repertoire (mainly: can he rock and can he write good songs?).

The screaming thing... could be an issue, but on the other hand it would at least make his sound distinctive from Freddie; you want him to put his own stamp on there. But you also need a vocalist who's clearly in the Queen style (unlike, say, Robbie Williams or Paul Rodgers - who both have the stage presence but not the voice). Lambert's the closest I've ever seen to someone who can carry off the Freddie vibe without being a carbon copy.

Incidentally, he also sings the high vocal line in We Are The Champions, which Freddie never did live - so I think he wins brownie points for that! Getting Gail Ann Dorsey in to bolster the backing vocals would also help:

Oh, and for reference, here's the heaviest thing a member of Queen's done to date:

Something like that, but with better lyrics, please. smile

Above all else, there needs to be NEW MUSIC. And good new music, not that shite on The Cosmos Rocks. It's a make or break thing, really - as hard a task as Axl had with Chinese Democracy. He flunked it to a degree, it'd be nice if my other favourite childhood band could make an epic comeback.

Having given this a bit of thought... a Queen/Lambert collaboration could work, but they would really need to put some thought and effort into it.

1) Record a new album. A karaoke act isn't going to cut it. Call it Restoration, or Jubilee, or something. Be cocky. Queen was never self-effacing.

2) Move heaven and earth to get Deacon involved. Two old guys trading off their band name with some session musicians and an American Idol singer = not going to cut it. Deacon's endorsement - even if it was limited to studio work and writing credits - would make a huge difference.

3) If you can't get Deacy, get a bass player who's an active participant in the band, not just a session guy milling around the back of the stage in a black t-shirt. Given that the backing vocals were a key component in the Queen sound, why not add something new to the mix? As mentioned upthread, Bowie's old bassist Gail Ann Dorsey would be good - she did the Freddie vocals on Bowie's live version of Under Pressure, so would add a bit of oomph to the songs live.

4) ROCK. People are going to be expecting the 80s pop-tinged Queen with Lambert fronting the band - he can do the showtunes and the big ballads, but can he belt out a Tie Your Mother Down or a Hammer to Fall? Prove it with the first track - make it the heaviest thing Queen's ever done.

5) Collaborate. All those artists who claim to have been influenced by Queen? Time for them to put up or shut up. Get Dave Grohl to co-write a rock track, Axl to pen a piano ballad, Lady Gaga to come up with a pop track. Hell, ask one of them to produce the thing.

6) Put a bit of Freddie in there - complete one of his unreleased tracks as a duet with the new singer. Kisses to the past, and all that.

Do all of that, and it might - MIGHT - just work.

Excellent. Cementing his rock n' roll credentials. All he needs to do now is get into a fight with Tommy Hilfiger and we're sorted.

Made in Heaven was pretty good, I thought – certainly the most thematically consistent of Queen's records. But yeah, you could hear where they were papering over the gaps in the material. I'd love to have heard Face it Alone completed, but there just isn't the material available to do it justice. Maybe as a duet with a new singer, but the fans would blow a gasket.

And I'm impressed with Adam Lambert's performance. I'd happily watch him if he went on tour with Queen – though I'd rather they didn't just do a karaoke-style run through of the old hits, I'd like to see them do a full album together. He's the only person I've seen who has the showmanship and the voice to perform Freddie's material, and I'd be prepared to give him a fair chance. Rather him than Paul Rogers or Robbie Williams or the various others they've tried over the years.

It'd be nice if Queen and Lambert actually got a bassist to record with them in studio rather than just having a session guy on tour. Ideally Deacon, but someone like Gail Ann Dorsey might be good (and could bolster the backing vocals a bit!).

There is way more to songwriting than Lyrics, melodies and chord progressions. Most people don't realize that.

Should Queen drummer not get credit for We Will Rock You? Prob most famous drum riff of all time?

Well… no. Because 1) it's not played on drums, it's foot-stamps and hand-claps, and 2) he didn't write the song, Brian May did.

And looking to royalty statements tells you fuck-all, incidentally - Queen always credited their songs to all four members of the band in the 80s, to prevent disputes about royalties tearing the band apart. I'd imagine GN'R did a similar thing, hence the songs being credited to all the core members.

#1698 Re: Dust N' Bones & Cyborg Slunks » Slash Shows Off His Band's Chemistry on New Live Disc (stream-link) » 780 weeks ago

Slash is on fire on that disc. The band are... passable. Like a pub band. And I can't stand Myles - sorry, I just find his singing voice really irritating. If Slash were to hook up with the VR guys and get Chester Bennington on vocals - pretty much the only guy with the vocal range and the venom to spit out Axl's lyrics - I would be a very happy camper. But I just can't be having with all this solo stuff.

Or if Axl would just swallow the bile and do a couple of songs with the old team at the R&RHoF - especially with Slash on form like this - that would make my day.

Opening CD with a TWAT video as the lead single with Buckethead's solo would have blown people away.

No it woudln't because the average Joe wouldn't see the Buckethead solo the way hardcore fans on these message boards do. I like Buckethead and even I don't see what's so great about the TWAT solo.  the song is too long for a lead single and it would bore radio listeners. In 2008 music videos wouldn't have the impact it used to anyways.  It would not be Slash walking outta the chruch or  rising up outta the water all over again. TWAT as a lead single woudl've been so much worse than CD

It should've been a single. With a video in which Buckethead emerges from a chicken coop atop that same cliff from November Rain, aces the solo and is then beamed up by the mothership to return to his home planet, his work here on Earth done.
