The song that got me into Guns N' Roses:

Someone's already posted KOHD from the Freddie Mercury Tribute, so here's Paradise City:

Such a damn shame that SCOM was cut from that gig for timing reasons. Really, they couldn't lose Zucchero?

Watched a couple of excerpts, it just made me sad. Myles, ffs. Axl shoulda been up there, it would've been ten minutes out of his life. Would it have made any appreciable difference to him in the long run?

Well, Sonisphere may have been cancelled (boo!) but the show must go on - Queen's playing two gigs at Hammersmith Apollo. Which is good for me, 'cause it means I don't have to slog all the way to Knebworth!

What I don't understand is... why can't they just get together with some acoustics, bash out some songs in a room and record/release the resulting jams? It worked for GN'R Lies...

I think Axl was remarkably calm and balanced in that letter. He has his view, Duff has his, I can respect both viewpoints since they're treating it like mature adults. Better that than them mouthing off at each other out of petty spite.

It's a damn shame we're not going to see the AFD line-up together (ever, based on that statement), so if Axl will just pull his finger out and record an album with the current line-up, we can all move on.

PS - and if Velvet Revolver could see their way to reuniting with Chester Bennington on vocals, that would also be nice.

Yeah, I thought that sign-off was a bit selfish. The rest of the letter seems heartfelt though, and it clearly touched a nerve with Duff.

He's such a classy guy. Duff should get together with Bumblefoot, Brian May and Dave Grohl and form a band made up of the nicest guys in rock. They could drive around in a van like the Scooby-Doo crew, being stand-up guys to everyone they meet.

Isn't it funny. People hounded Axl over Chinese Democracy for years. Now it's out he's being hounded over a reunion. Reunion questions are like the 'when's Chinese democracy coming out'

If Axl wants people off his case he needs to make a statement with the new band. Touring ain't good enough.

I just want him to do something. Reunite, new album... something other than this endless cycle of touring. Because he's not just wasting his own talent, he's wasting that of Tommy Stinson, Bumblefoot, DJ Ashba et al.

At the moment it's looking like the only way we'll get new music out of Axl Rose is if he's run over by a bus and the record company gets its hands on the archive (and were that to happen - God forbid - you can bet your life the execs would be straight on the phone to Slash, Izzy and Duff).

It's no surprise that the best song - musically, at least - on Slash's solo album is Ghost, aka The One Where Izzy Plays Rhythm. Slash and Izzy on their own produce good music, yeah. Together there's some sort of weird alchemy that takes place.

#1619 Re: Guns N' Roses » RRHoF Discussion (Izzy/Slash/Axl Press Statements) » 759 weeks ago

There's also the fact that Axl overlaid Huge's solo on top of Slash's work for Sympathy. And he's continued to do the same sort of thing - chopping and changing solos and assembling them from different takes - to everyone from Bumblefoot to Brian May. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if the TWAT and TIL solos were assembled from different takes.

I think that grates with Slash on a pretty basic level. Both because he's an organic, blues-improv-based guitarist, and because he probably feels it shows massive disrespect for his work. I mean, that approach annoyed Brian May, and he's the Nicest Man In Rock.

#1620 Re: Dust N' Bones & Cyborg Slunks » My GN'R Pipe Dream... » 759 weeks ago

Thing is... let's assume that in Magical Fantasy Land Slash becomes best buds with Paul Huge. Axl does a solo album with Pitman, with all the electronic stuff from ChiDem (Madagascar, etc).

We get a follow-up GN'R album with Duff, Huge and Matt and Dizzy, showcasing the It's 5'O Clock Somewhere tracks (with different lyrics, of course) plus the early Huge-written ChiDem stuff (IRS, Catcher, TWAT without the big outro solo and This I Love) and probably Fall To Pieces (original demo version without the killer guitar line) with Axl lyrics. Plus any stuff from Duff's Loaded albums of the late 90s, Sympathy for the Devil and maybe Set Me Free, if the riff had been bouncing around in Matt's head back then.

It then bombs because everyone's listening to grunge/nu-metal and GN'R style rock is "so over."

Fact is, the Great Hiatus between TSI? and ChiDem/Contraband basically took up the period when GN'R was really, really unfashionable. So tbh the band would probably have broken up in the wake of an unsuccessful album anyway.
