This spark stuff is nonsense to me.
The issue is entirely a personality issue.
Axl thinks Slash is manipulative and scheming against him (eg: thinking Slash approved "My World" as a power play to trick Axl into looking bad etc) - and Slash doesn't have a lot of time for Axl's way of life (keeping people waiting in the studio - not answering communication till he feels like it etc) because he feels disrespected because he's cut about the name/employee issue and feels disrespected (eg Paul huge over dubbing Slash's solo on SFTD).
It's got nothing at all to do with creativity.
Slash has busted out a stupid amount of great riffs and solos since 93 when you consider his entire catalogue including guest spots as isolated guitar parts, while Axl's writing is also similarly impressive (Madagascar, TIL, TWAT) when you look at his vocal melodies and lyrics in the CD era.
Look how good songs like Madagascar are then realise it's because Axl's fixed up a song that started from someone like Paul who isn't a genius songwriter. Look at how good something like Serial Killer is then realise it's that good despite the whole band including Rod Jackson being miles below Slash's talent level.
The creativity is still there - they just need to end the war. The problem is entirely personal.
I agree - one of the most frustrating things about the whole Axl/Slash spat is hearing potential in songs from each of them that could be better realised if they were working together.
Imagine Messages with Axl writing and singing the lyrics. Or Anastasia, or Beggars and Hangers-On. Or This I Love with a Slash solo on there.

The other thing people are missing is that GN'R's moment had passed in '94/'95 because of grunge and the emergence of nu-metal. If they'd put out an album with the Snakepit songs, Fall to Pieces and This I Love on it in 1996, it would've flopped. No matter how much better it was than the competition.

At some point, I'll have my last GNR show, and Axl will have his last show.
My mother always told me the story of my grandmother wanting to see Elvis in Indiana - only a 3 hour drive. My mother said "oh, mom, he'll be back again." Only he wasn't. That was the last one.
Morbid, but, hey. I won't make the mistake I made in 2002 "It's during school! I'll wait for the summer..."
Yeah, when GN'R :peace:played the UK in 2002 I was skint. I thought, "eh, they'll come back again, this is just round one."
Now I'm probably never going to see Buckethead live.

I have often wondered just how much money would convince them to reunite for a one-off show. Like, if that Russian billionaire had given them $100m or something.

Trouble is he can't pursue a career as a solo artist now - because his solo project was the new GN'R. If he decides to launch himself as "Axl Rose, solo artist" now, people will just point out that he's essentially been doing that for the last decade.

Yeah, but both AC/DC and Metallica weren't struggling against the ill-will generated by firing the entire original band. Okay, 'tallica had a new bassist, but bluntly, to the general public, bassists and drummers are pretty much interchangeable. Chinese Democracy was his big chance to sell the world on the idea of a new line-up for Guns N' Roses, and he didn't promote it sufficiently. In the wake of CD's mediocre reception - however unjustified that is - the only way Axl will have a Black Ice/Death Magnetic level of success with the general public is if Slash is on the new album.

Jesus, just hire Chester Bennington. How hard can it be?

Yeah, I have no problem with what Slash or Axl do. I may have some problems with what Axl DOESN'T do, but that's a different story. The only real problems I've had with Slash's decisions in the past were appearing on American Idol as a "mentor". I despise that show, so that was tough to stomach. If I was a fan of the show, I may have felt different. I thought the Paradise City cover with Cypress Hill was awful, and the same with that Baby Can't Drive song with Nicole Sherzinger. But overall, I understand why he does what he does and can't fault him for putting forth the effort. Axl has made plenty of bad decisions himself over the years, and he doesn't put forth half the effort Slash does.
But didn't the Nicole Scherzinger thing happen organically? As in, she got sang with Camp Freddy, and presumably Slash said, "You've got a good set of pipes, want to sing on the solo album?" Fair enough, there's a commercial consideration there – her name will sell a few copies of the record to the pop crowd – but it's not some cynically manufactured marketing opportunity.
