Fight Club

It's hard to go wrong with any Fincher/Pitt collaboration.

Wasn't there a club in Texas or somewhere a couple years back that advertised GNR showing up, and obviously it wasn't true?

Is this what you guys are talking about?

Ga. Fans Disappointed by Axl's No-Show

Tuesday, April 26, 2005

Axl Rose hasn't cut a new album in 10 years, but his name still draws crowds — even without the man himself.

That was the case Friday night at Coyotes, a small club in Cartersville, Ga., about 40 miles outside of Atlanta.

Contrary to all evidence, Coyotes insisted that the Guns N' Rosesfrontman would emerge from his self-imposed seclusion to play a gig with former bandmate Izzy Stradlin on its humble stage.

The strange story began a few weeks ago, when Atlanta radio station 96Rock started advertising the show. The Associated Press called GNR's manager, who said Rose would not be performing. The station pulled the ads, but the club promised the show would go on, producing a contract apparently signed by someone other than Rose.

In the days before the show, club manager Pete Grim was a bit nervous as word spread about past riots by disgruntled GNR fans. So Grim removed all the club's chairs and tables, replaced glass bottles with plastic cups, hired about 30 bouncers and dropped the cover charge from $20 to $15.

He also handed out photocopies of a three-page contract with booking agency Bryant Entertainment and copies of what he said was a $1,500 certified check sent to the agency as a down payment.

Along came Friday night. About 400 people showed up at Coyotes, some from as far as Florida and Tennessee. The bar's beer prices magically doubled.

Coyotes stuck to its story until the eleventh hour — which in this case was shortly after 11 p.m., when Grim took the stage to give customers the not-so-unexpected news.

"I pretty much knew they weren't going to show up," said Michael Mustin, 25 — who nonetheless came more than 100 miles from Hayesville, N.C.

Grim said the booking agent, John Bryant, had promised as recently as Thursday night that Rose would be there, "and he was going to expect his money whether I advertised it or not."

All three telephone numbers listed on the contract for Bryant Entertainment were out of service. A fourth number, which Grim said he used to reach Bryant on Thursday night, had a recording saying the subscriber was no longer receiving calls. The contract listed the company's offices at addresses in Winter Park, Fla., and Chicago Ridge, Ill. But cross-checking these addresses found the Florida address to be home to a chemical company and the one in Chicago a private residence.

Craig Serritella, 28, from nearby Canton. Ga., said he was skeptical from the get-go, but the chance to see his favorite band was too tempting to resist. "I mean why would they come to Cartersville, Ga., of all places," he said.

The fans, disappointed but not surprised, left in peace.

"No confrontations. No altercations. No arrests," said Cartersville Police Lieutenant T. Ellis.

And no Axl.

And as for the Chinese Democracy curiosity factor.  It's hard to keep up the curiosity for anything for 15 years, don't you think?  How'd those new Star Wars movies do?  People may have been fans of GNR but gave up when the original members started to leave.  Maybe people were interested when GNR reappeared in 2001, but when things fell apart in 2002 more gave up.  The next 4 years brought absolutely nothing to the table to add to any curiosity factor.  By 2006, was there really that much curiosity left?  Well another tour cut short and it looked like more of the same and then, bam, the album came out, out of nowhere really.  Bottom line, I think the curiosity factor is vastly overblown.

That's the crux of his problem right there.  He (Axl) shoots himself in the foot whenever an opportunity presents itself, usually by inaction.  The curiosity factor could have been exploited in 2001/2002 but I have no idea why that didn't work out.  The best explanation was the record company wanted a hit single and Axl went back into the studio and tried to write one or tweak the existing songs to make it sound like a hit.  2001 was the year of the bad excuses for me if I recall correctly as they cancelled a European Tour because Axl just found out about it on the internet.

The problem with Chinese Democracy in all its phases is that at the end of the day I'm not sure how much he has grown the fanbase.  Most of the original GNR fanbase eventually moved on to more active bands or they just dig out AFD, Lies, UYI, and TSI albums.  The fans gained during 2001, 2002, and 2006 tours, grew tired of waiting for the damn thing to come out and some just moved on.  If they stuck around, their initial enthusiasm for the album became restrained  see davegnr2k as an example.

robin's got stage presence on stage with guns n' roses. DJ doesn't. stage presence = epic solos. robin's TIL solo's epic. the greatest. i surprised you don't rate it the best. what do you rate the greatest? i rate robin's TIL solo #1. better than slash's child o' mine. better than stairway to heaven. better than layla. better than them all. you're mind should be changed. axl should change his mind bringing robin back for the fans

This is a joke right?  There is no way anyone in their right mind believes this.

Damn you Lofton!  That CM Punk thing really fucked up my chances of winning.  I don't think you have anything to worry about, unless something strange occurs.  I think the game ends after SS anyway.

Note to BLS Pride:  I think Shawn Michaels is returning soon at next month's PPV, so you should be getting points from him.

Yep, dump all the Chinese material in to a boxset for the hardcores. It would probably be quite profitable. Then, either start from scratch with the new lineup and call it a "solo" act or play the reunion card. Just my two cents.

The problem with further New GNR releases is that UMG will probably refuse to release it because of how bad that CD did.  I think there almost has to be something original GNR bundled it here to make sure that it'll sell.

The reunion card is the only thing that Axl has in his corner that anybody (ie mainstream) is interested in right now.  That's why Azoff won't ever dump him--it's a free lottery ticket waiting to be cashed out whenever Axl changes him mind about Slash.

I agree with most about the media--they're on his side and let's face it the public likes comeback stories.  Axl has one tailor for made whenever he chooses to reunite.  He's already been knocked down several pegs with the CD fiasco.

Not that I don't believe this, because it does seem pretty logical.  But the Daily News isn't the most credible paper is it?  I thought it had a bit of a reputation as a gossip kind of paper, and it is in the gossip section.

I think you're thinking about the NY Post which has a notorious rep for being a gossipy/ unreliable newspaper.

Back to the topic, if he fires Azoff , the list of people who are interested in managing him is very short and he'd be back to a Merck/Goldstein type manager
which isn't good news for anyone--fans or Axl.

anyone think this meltdown has to do with his muse and great obsession of his life Steph is back on the market??

To be honest, the meltdown happened long before that.

#1550 Re: Guns N' Roses » Why didn't the label support Chinese Democracy? » 838 weeks ago

I would've loved to have been a fly on the wall for those negotiations with Best Buy.  They had to have sold them a whole bunch of nonsense and promises that they just never followed through on.  I can only imagine.  I'm surprised there hasn't been a public outlash from BB to this point.  Already we know that Best Buy asked for and was promised a video, which has never come.  I bet that's just the tip of the iceberg.  There's probably some serious lawsuits going on right now that we know nothing about.

I think they come off as idiots to the public if they made a complaint and their company is already in some financial trouble.  I don't think the public knows how much they overpaid for Chinese Democracy.  Neemo said it was like $10 a cd in another thread.  They're also depending on Axl Rose which isn't a very smart strategy since he's extremely unreliable.

And lastly, like Russ said I'm not exactly crying for them since CC's demise their prices on their products have pretty much sucked.
