Fellow members,
I've been lurking daily for a long while and remain impressed with the continued loyalty to the band and the site. It's a credit to James that he runs should a great forum to be part of - regardless of the bends we have watched form in the GNR road for the last few years.

I'm giving the album serious listens and while I am astounded by how clever some of the songs are, I find the album wears me down or gets me listless and depressed for reasons I wasn't sure about, and then I realised. See if you agree or have thoughts to share.

Most bands that realease an album are pumped and out there with lots to say - shockingly GNR remains the mute vessel we had surely hoped would be put to an end. Did anybody expect this?
No interviews.
No video.
Poor quality album finish.
Axl always had so much to say...especially about his released work. Now?
Axl was always such a perfectionist but all the typos and the poor finish to the artwork?

The theme of the songs just wears me down. Axl has always said his songs were biographical.
If they re then his entire life has boiled down to:

'Slash won't break me'
and
'Stephanie broke me'.

I am sad for the guy - all those years of therapy have done him no good. He still can't forgive, he still can't forget, he still can't  move on. I could almost pray for him to get some peace...
Does anybody not think that releasing 'This I love' as an obvious reference to Stephanie is not a little..well...pathetic and creepy it's soooo long ago???

As structured music goes, this album astounds me with the complexity of some of it but, despite the strong emotions expressed by Axl, for me it lacks a beating heart. I still miss Slash's input and that is actually getting more profound with each listen - this is affecting my experience of the whole thing and I'm really trying.

Anybody else oddly bummed? Creeped out?

Maybe Axl is doing the one album of his very best songs and then bowing to possible pressures to get a reunion underway? It could explain why he doesn't want to talk about 4 albums anymore, he gets this one and then goes back after the big pay cheque...just a thought.

Fellow Gunners,
I was struck by Baz's reference to Axl calling him to enquire about his possible addition to the VR line up. As James has always rightly pointed out, Axl's obsession with Slash and the old crew may have driven him to spending 10 or more years trying to prove he can top anything musically he had created with their help but at the same time it has totally paralysed him and at this moment, has destroyed his legacy and maybe even his career.

He's like an obsessed ex, he doesn't want the old crew back but at the same time he cannot let anyone he deals with get involved with them either. Izzy is about the only one who seems to be able to commute between the two sides without getting hassled by Axl.

Axl '˜s deep involvement with therapies from all ends of the spectrum (medical to spiritual to downright off the wall) are well documented and spoken to by him at great lengths in the ninties. The titles of some of the songs rumoured to be on this flying saucer of an album CD indicate he's been reading lots  material and possibly travelling extensively in what appears to be an earnest attempt to better understand himself and the world around him (check the web for references to Atlas Shrugged , Chinese Democracy, Cather in the Rye etc).

So with all this soul searching and therapy,  I wonder has anyone who has worked on this guy for the last decade and a half pointed out to him that he needs to sit down with the old crew and make some sort of peace?  It's the only way he can move forward. Are even his shrinks yes men too?

I despair at the carry on over at HTGTH; NOTHING that may cause a ripple in Axl's mood is allowed to remain. What good is it to anybody to be indulged to that level? It keeps Axl stuck in his narcissistic hole. Does Jarmo etc not realise they are actually enabling their idol's downward slide?

Axl needs to realise that he had a major part to play in where he finds himself today, stop blaming and trying to control everybody around him and man the fuck up. I think Slash has acknowledged his role in the death of the original GNR  and has publically said so. Both he, Duff, Matt and Izzy have all dealt with their demons are all sober and working hard. Axl seems like the last one to get his big issue sorted out, get off the much mocked '˜rock star trip' he's stayed on for the last decade and get fucking real.

I am just amazed that with all the money etc that record companies made from these guys that nobody on this planet could ever be found in over  15 years that could pull these guys into a room, kick their asses and show them what their years of feuding have robbed them of.

So does therapy work? If so, what has all of this therapy gotten Axl??

Jesus, this band...
The best news in ages is coming out and Finck is not available for comment..
Maybe Axl is going to force him to re-evaluate his 'educated guess' and make a decision about who his loyalties lie with.
Maybe Finck told him he had no faith in him releasing it anymore and that was the kick up the ass Axl needed..
I just cannot work out what Robin is doing at this stage.. GNR seem closer to getting this out than ever.
Still, we've been here before!!

#1135 Re: Guns N' Roses » Rumor - Izzy replacing Robin » 906 weeks ago

Izzy on rythm, Fortus steps up to do lead, BH or BF for the riff madness
It would be weird though, Izzy and Fortus look very alike..

Like Monkeychow I can't see Izzy do it, he's not arsed with Lead Singer Syndrome anymore, he's run a mile from it time and time again.

Again I would be fascinated to hear Izzy's take on the whole GNR/VR issue now that Axl & him have made friends again and he's still friends with Slash, Duff and Matt.

Izzy's account would probably be the only one worth considering as the nearest to gospel.

That was the key quote for me as well.  I didn't want to be the one to post it, but it's obvious that even if somehow a reunion happened, you better get to one of the first shows because the last ones likely won't happen unless Axl is so broke that he has to play "by the rules".  After 20 years, I think it's safe to say Axl will always go on when Axl is good and ready to go on.

Lat time I saw Axl in Dublin he came on bang on 8pm and as far as I recall for most of the rest of the tour he was less than an hour late on which is good for him. Maybe he's learned his lesson...

Wow, Slash sounds really bitter about this. Especially when he's been apologetic about how he dissed Axl after leaving GN'R. Now he's dissing Scott.

It just sounds like they were really over ending up having to go through with Scott what they'd already been through with Axl.

Do you think he's bitter? More tired of it all to me. He doesn't seem eager to start a war of words with Scott, Scott is much more asinine than Slash anyway and the response is likely to be a whole lot more venomous.

Regarding Scott, just remember STP ended with the entire band moving off together after Dan and Scott got into a ruck over Scott's inability to get clean. This all sounds sadly like another unit we tend to go on about 'round these parts.

I bet the rest of STP are watching and listening closely....

By the way, any word on Mary in all of this? Is she still with Scott if he's been back running around off his face again?

Kravitz could be great for a single album but he is a one trick pony all be it a damn good one.

why has this thread about Robin turned into stupid reunion speculations.     your statement is incorrect.  a lot of people dont' givea shit about the old lineup and dont' care to see a stupid reunion.    Lets not take this thread there.

My point has NOTHING to do with a reunion. My point is that this line up have been out on tour twice and the media still harps on about the old line up getting back together. On a world wide scale, and compared to the late eighties and nineties, GNR get much less attention.  Your personal views on the new line up, in the great big world outside of these forums, is very much the minority. Money talks my friend and money chases the old line up and not the new.

My point (if you read it) was to suggest that the current line up is only placed as a valid replacement to the old line up when it suits Axl (live only) and that it is possible that Finck has decided he can do no more for Axl and GNR at this time and has moved to a place where he is happier, for now.

#1140 Re: Guns N' Roses » Del James comments on Robins status » 906 weeks ago

Good points Buzz. You're probably right about a long term reunion being a stretch if the contractual stuff can't be worked out between the tw parties.

Still, a world tour could be a $150M gross earning possibility (I base that on revenue the Spice Hags grossed on their tour and it was a short one). Even Izzy might be interested. $20M into your bank account for a years work with your mid to late forties looming; that must be hard to ignore.

I maintain that if the Eagles can do it, then GNR could too. If they could just let the chemicals flow on stage and be adults about the money stuff behind the scenes it's a win win for everone. I bet Axl's album would sell much better off the strength of that publicity plus he would no longer have the burden of proving that he was the true heart of guns n roses and not just a vital part.

I believe that people in general will always prefer to see Izzy, Axl, Slash and Duff play together live rather than the crew Axl has assembled today. You cannot compete with a fairy tale, a brilliant fluke and an album that defined a generation, I think that expectation is placed on them and it's not really fair.

I often wonder does that burden weigh heavily on Robin and the guys? It must if you spend almost a decade of your life writing songs and yet your work still cannot be allowed to represent the band you joined. Maybe Finck just feels he's given enough and that it's time to move on and be respected for what he is, like he is in NIN and by their fans.
