I even started wondering this in my youth when it became obvious he was more bark than bite...why doesn't anyone call his bluff?
I'm not sure Slash could do it. He doesn't seem like a fighter. Duff or Matt could've handled him.
I also agree it would've changed the dynamics completely. One ass kicking would've put a stop to constantly walking on egg shells around him.
The one guy that could have done it and had cred with both factions would have been Izzy. Axl wouldn't have pulled off all of that 90s bullshit if Izzy had set him straight. Maybe Adler but he was too fucked up on drugs. And Izzy just didn't give a fuck say past 1989 or 90 for his own reasons.
By the time Matt tried it , it was too late and he was still more or less a hired gun even though he had been with the band for years.
Great RS article by the way. I'm not a fan but Lady Gaga seems like an interesting person to hang around with.
The other two guys (Slash and Duff) were always kind of passive aggressive and in the case of Duff "spineless".

Tomorrow night in Tennessee is maybe 60% sold. If that.

They are nuts to be sticking to $395 for G.A. Cut the prices and fill the pit.
Perhaps the only good thing to say is that the ticket scalpers are not going to win this time. Verified Resale seats are listed for more than available seats located in rows closer to the stage.
It's the same deal w/the Hollywood, FL show. Prices are lower at $350. But barely anything got sold, and it's not 60% like TN. Yikes. It's pretty bad, two days out from the show.

Can you imagine how much better he’d have been received if this Axl had shown up at the VMAs?
Fuck yes! That was one of the big problems. Yeah, it seems superficial but he looked weird and not the Axl that most people were accustomed to. Go with any of the 2001 looks or even the 2006 look (to signify yes, this is a new band!) and the entire reaction to the thing changes. Well that and releasing the album around that time.
I'd almost want to go back in time and redo that entire time period. Such a wasted opportunity.
And yeah, they should have went with The Blues. It sounds a lot more like "classic guns" and it's a lot shorter. If you're doing a medley busting out an epic that requires a soundbite is not the best idea.

02-06 was his moment.
2001-2004 for me. Once that NYT article or whatever came out going over the costs and the over runs, it kind of became a joke and you lose all momentum. So anywhere from the RIR appearance to before the article came out.

Eddie wanted to bury the hatchet early on, walked up to Roth backstage to hug him, and Dave told him to fuck off and kept walking.
Eddie and Alex had simply talked too much shit. The damage was irreparable.
Just like with GNR, that reunion should've been so much more than it was.
Only album they could pull together had to come from scrounging through ancient demos.
Sound familiar?
It's a miracle they did that. Without Wolfie egging it on, it never even happens.
Yeah, they took too many shots at one another over the years. Remember the MTV news interview after the failed reunion in 1996? And Alex and (mostly) Eddie were just ripping on him. That was brutal if you were DLR.
Guns doesn't seem that bad. And to be honest, they seem to have gotten over the hurdles (Axl showing up late and the Paul Tobias stuff). Maybe they'll never be close like they were before. But they seem cordial and at least can tolerate each other's presecene off stage.
They weren't the best of friends but there wasn't any animosity between them throughout the reunion years.
No. They were low key ripping on one another during the reunion as well. You had to read between the lines type of stuff. I was reading some New York Times articles. And there were quotes if you read them, you could tell the reunion was just for the money and playing the old tunes.
#96 Re: The Sunset Strip » Eagles Farewell Tour » 93 weeks ago
Two reasons...
They never really hid the fact that the reunion was all about the money
Not willing to risk old tensions flaring up and imploding the whole thing
They would go away a few years, tour, go away. They also aren't friends. The only time they are together is onstage. It's not really an environment that would lead to another prolific run.
This probably applies to the Van Halen tours after Roth rejoined them as well.
#97 Re: Guns N' Roses » What Steven brought to GNR » 93 weeks ago
By comparison, Izzy straight up told the guys to go fvck themselves because of the money situation.
I've always respected Izzy for that. I mean he contributed/wrote etc to most of their hits. Why the hell should he take less than what he is worth?

I'm excited too but my expectations are not off the charts like they were in the 2000s.
The leaks started to lower them a bit and then the album release made me realize the project was overhyped.
Yeah, Prostitute kind was the one for me. It's a good song and all but the hype was not close to what the song was. I mean it's not Guns/Axl fault. At the end of the day, it's just music and I'll enjoy it for what it is.
#99 Re: Guns N' Roses » The General confirmed next » 94 weeks ago
They wait until the last minute to insinuate they might get productive...but we're at the two minute warning. Better late than never...but I have to see action before I believe.
I'm skeptical for a variety of reasons on new music, not the Chinese leftovers stuff. Slash and Axl couldn't get along the last time they tried this almost 30 years ago, and I'm not sure much has changed.
The Chinese stuff is diferent because for more or less the song is finshed and the other two guys just add in whatever they want. There's no creative collaboration as there is in new music.

And while "Prostitute" was a little less fire than I would've wanted, I love that track. It's 100% the direction they should've ran with, unfortunately we only got scraps of what could've been.
I've been listening to the locker leaks and that song I've gained a better appreciation for. I just love the "soundscape" aspect of it. It's a deep cut and not really accesible to casuals.
Oh listening to all it (locker leaks + leftovers that have been released) I would say one of the main issues with most of the songs are a lack of catchy choruses. Lofton, sort of brought it up with Perhaps and then I sort of paid attention to most of the other finished songs and they really do lack "catchiness". Add in the garbage production (from the 2008 release) and it's easy to see why the "no hits" thing was projected. I will say though some of the music and lyrics on some of these songs are strong enough where the chorus issue doesn't matter.
